October 4: Student eLearning Day & Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parents, please put a big star on your calendars on Thursday October 4. That day will be a corporation-wide eLearning day involving all Milan Schools. On eLearning days, students will be expected to attend “virtual” school. Students will not physically be in the building but expectations for completing the assigned work and submitting it on time are the same as if they were actually here at MES. The buses will not run and no meals will be served but our cafeteria will be open for those students needing wifi access. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian as no school supervision will be provided.
Students will receive their assignments for eLearning Day by Tuesday, October 2, to insure they understand the assignments and are able to download the material if needed. Your child will complete and submit schoolwork to their teacher by using the electronic device, iPad or Chromebook, issued to them by the school. Your child’s “attendance” for that day will be determined by their participation in completing and submitting the assigned work. Student work will be due Friday, October 5. Students not completing the work will be marked absent. If questions arise, students can contact the teacher in multiple ways including email, leaving a voice message at 812-654-2922, Google Classroom or other learning tools. Teachers will respond during their “Office Hours” or other times they are available. Watch for more detailed information from your child's teacher about completing and submitting schoolwork that day and when their specific office hours will be.
This is also our Parent/Teacher Conference Day and teachers will be meeting with parents during the day and until 7:00 p.m. that evening. If you have not yet set up a time to meet with your child’s teacher, they will be contacting you soon to arrange a conference. Quarter 1 report cards will be given to parents at the conference.
Our preschool class WILL BE IN SESSION that day.

Attendance Reminders
Last year, Milan Schools joined a program sponsored by the Ripley County Probation Department designed to improve student attendance in all Ripley County schools. This resulted in some significant changes to last year's attendance policy and another tightening of the guidelines for this year. As the cold/flu season approaches and student absences increase, we thought it a good idea to remind you of some of the major changes that were made:
- Each student is limited to six parent call-in excused absences per school year. After the sixth call-in, additional absences will require a physician’s note or they will be considered unexcused.
- If the student is late to school or leaves school early for a total of three times, it will be considered as one day of unexcused absence. (Parents will receive a reminder letter after the first conversion of three tardies to one unexcused absence.)
- If a student arrives at school after 9:00 a.m. or leaves school before 2:00 p.m. it is considered a half-day absence and counts towards the total of either excused or unexcused absences depending upon the reason the student was away from school.
- Parents will be sent a letter after three days of unexcused absences and the Ripley County Probation Department will be alerted and will take over monitoring the student’s attendance.
- Any absence covered by a medical excuse, including tardies and early dismissals, do not count toward the absence limits.
More details, including a description of types of excused and unexcused absences can be found in the student handbook on pages 7 and 8. You are also welcome to call the school with questions or to clarify attendance guidelines.

Counselor News from Mrs. Schwering & Mrs. Schwing-Stamper
Milan Elementary School is excited to start their second year as a Leader in Me school! Our students are learning the 7 habits of highly effective people and practicing these habits through opportunities provided at school, at home, and in the community. Each Monday, all MES students and staff join together in the gymnasium to say the Pledge of Allegiance, hear announcements, receive shout outs from staff members and hear fourth grade student leaders teach about the habit of the week. Students are offered opportunities to apply for school-wide jobs, for which they must complete an application and go through an interview. In addition, students are encouraged to be Proactive (Habit #1) with classroom jobs by helping with chores and tasks that need to be completed.
Also, new this year are leadership binders which gives each MES student a place to track their own academic and personal goals. Students will monitor their data and growth and be able to explain their goals and progress to teachers and parents as a way to encourage them to take ownership of their own education. Students will use these binders during student led conferences this year in October.
Teams of teachers are working diligently to create a school environment that is welcoming and inspiring for the students, and they will also be involved in this process. This is the second year for the Student Lighthouse team, a group of 4th grade leaders, who meet weekly to learn about the 7 habits and find projects throughout the year to apply the habits and improve their school climate and culture. All students will be encouraged to not only work independently, but learn to work interdependently by sharing ideas and finding solutions that are a Win-Win (Habit #4) for everyone involved. In doing so, we hope to create a school culture where differences are not only accepted but celebrated, and each child understands the true potential and genius within him/herself.
MES also hopes to connect with families and community businesses and groups to help guide and mentor our students and help them become successful individuals and community members.

Student Drop-off and/or Pick-up Procedures
If you must bring your child to school in the morning or pick him/her up after school, you are required to use only the side street leading to the drop-off/pick-up area near the pool area entrance. DO NOT USE THE PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL before 8:00 A.M. or from 2:30-3:00 P.M. This area is for bus drop off and pick up only. Additional car traffic creates a serious danger for everyone. You may use the front parking lot between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. only. (Please remember that students should not be dropped off at school before 7:45 a.m. as there is no supervision for them before that time.)
To access the morning drop-off area, turn onto Lakeside Drive at the bottom of the hill and follow it to the side parking lot near the pool entrance. Students are to be dropped off in this area only. The side entrance door is open from 7:30-8:00 a.m. each morning for students being dropped off.
For afternoon pick-up you will also turn onto Lakeview Drive but, at this time of the day, it is one-way only, with both lanes going up the hill. At the top of the hill turn left toward the railroad tracks, then make a right turn and go along the north end of the parking lot to the portable buildings and then turn right again to enter the parking lot and the student pick-up area. (This is opposite to what you do in the morning.)
Once their ride is stopped in the pick-up area, students will be released to enter the vehicle. When the student is safely seated and buckled into the vehicle, the driver should exit the parking lot by traveling in front of the Superintendent’s Office between the two rows of staff vehicles. Exiting car rider traffic will be stopped briefly when the buses are ready to leave the elementary lot.
We thank you for your patience and cooperation. Your child’s safety is our number one concern!

Classroom Ambassadors Chosen to Welcome New Students
Each year the classroom teacher chooses a boy and a girl to assume the role of student “ambassador” and serve as the official “meeters and greeters” for the class. Their job is to welcome visitors and escort them to and from the classroom or show them around our school. They also welcome new students to the classroom and help them get acquainted with our school and introduce them to their new classmates.
This year’s Student Ambassadors are: Emmarae Ashcraft, Weston Haugh-Fallis, Hailey Heimbrock, Trey Gump, Italia Grady, Matthew White, Lila Goodpaster, Peyton Baker, Ava Pittman, Wesley Palmer, Mackenzie Hunter, Brayden Webster, Brooklyn Smith, Hunter Wickizer, Morgan Hall, Colt Morling, Aubrey McAdams, Carson Ellis, Mya Sargent, Zackery Hartman, Paige Tucker, Liam Johnson, Allana Lows Feller, Daniel Whaley, Carly Martin, and Carter Montooth.
