West Weekly Update
October 27, 2023
Proviso West Newsletter
Hello Parents, Guardians and Students,
As we close in on another week of school, we want to thank all students and staff for their hard work and cooperation on PSAT testing day this past Tuesday, October 24, 2023, and make-up testing yesterday, Friday, October 27. It was a lot of work for the students to complete the PSAT; we are sure they were tired after the testing session. However, students demonstrated patience with the small technical issues, and staff pitched in to ensure we were getting students situated and set up for success.
It is always our focus to move students toward their goals. We want to make parents and students aware that we will begin increasing our efforts to reduce truancy throughout the school day. We will increase communication with parents in this area and implement additional strategies and supports to ensure students better understand expectations. The students must be in class on time to maximize learning.
As you know, safety is our number one priority! We feel fortunate to partner with Hillside Police and West 40 to ensure continuous improvement of our safety efforts.
We must thank our security team and our Behavior Interventionists for proactively preventing issues before they escalate. They have been working very hard, and we know it is a thankless job. We also appreciate all our staff and our community's efforts to keep our students safe and ready to learn.
We review student data daily to monitor, adjust, and be responsive in our safety efforts. We are seeing a positive difference, reduced incidents, and effective monitoring of our at-risk students.
The opening of bathrooms is strategic so that we can monitor them frequently. We have 46 bathrooms in the school and 24 in the education wing. This plan is designed to maximize our security team's ability to secure the entire building.
We are very thankful to the Proviso Board of Education for approving more security guards, and we are working diligently to fill those positions as soon as possible. Daily efforts are being made to strategically place security and administration to monitor the behavioral expectations here at West so this is a safe place for our students to learn.
We also use the Student Handbook to guide our consequences and restorative practices. Please review the expectations with your student/s.
Here are a few updates to keep you in the loop about our safety efforts:
- The strategic opening of the bathrooms is to ensure supervision of all students and facilities.
- During the morning entry and student arrival, A Building and the Fieldhouse restrooms will be secured to supervise all the incoming students and all school locations.
- Open restrooms will be accessible in E Building, located near the Café for emergencies and D Ramp.
- All approved restrooms will be opened by 7:50 AM.
- Four bathrooms are open on each floor instead of eight, allowing strategic usage near classrooms.
- This planning reduces potential incidents in the bathroom and ensures students are in class learning.
- We will closely monitor the bathrooms and adjust accordingly to keep the school safe.
- Signage and communication will be given to staff and students to ensure everyone knows the closest location to utilize the bathroom facilities.
Restroom schedules may change weekly, and bathrooms may be opened and closed depending on repairs or cleaning requests.
Thank you again for being our partners in learning!

Proviso West Students Enjoy Video Game Club
School Psychologist and Video Game Club Sponsor- Mr. T Burton
Mr. Burton credits long-time counselor Dr. Blade for recognizing his ability to connect with gamers and students who were often left out.
Dr. Blade encouraged me to sponsor the video game club. Though I no longer play video games myself, as a psychologist, I am particularly interested in the benefits that video games can offer for mental health and well-being. Video games can help people to relax and de-stress, connect with others, and learn new skills. They can also provide a safe space for people to explore their identities and express themselves creatively. I love watching them develop leadership, organizational skills, and a sense of community.
My motto is "come as you are, and don't hurt nobody." Anyone is welcome in my club. I try to keep things lighthearted, but if I see a student passionate about competing, I'll help them reach their full potential.
Join the Video Game Club!
Whether you're a casual gamer or a competitive esports athlete, the video game club is the place for you. We offer a variety of activities and events for all skill levels and interests, including:
- Game tournaments
- Game nights
- Game development workshops
- Field trips to gaming conventions and events
We also have a dedicated space for club members to hang out, play games, and socialize.
To join the video game club, simply contact the sponsor at firstname.lastname@example.org or show up at B221 Tuesdays at 3:15 PM.
We look forward to seeing you there!
