Early Life
Little Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel lived in an orphanage most of her life as her father freaked out over Coco's mother's death. After living at the orphanage for the first couple of years, the orphanage nuns taught her how to sew. This became useful as she opened her first clothing shop in 1910. She then introduced the little black dress and the Chanel suit which made clothing more comfortable for women as then it became popular in the American 1920s.
The Chanel Suit
