Second Grade Reading News

December 2016

Phonics Focus

We are finishing up learning about blends and digraphs. See videos below if you are not sure what they are! Our review of short vowel sounds is complete - your child should be able to read all short vowel words accurately!

Our focus will now shift to long vowel sounds (the vowel will say its name). Students will practice reading words that have a silent e on the end. They will learn that the silent e stays quiet so the other vowel can say its' name. We are also learning long vowel teams. When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking. We will start with long vowel patterns for a and move onto long vowel patterns for e after the new year.

Nightly Reading

We are so pleased with the consistency of students completing their nightly reading and returning their yellow folders on Fridays. Reading nightly is a powerful practice your child needs to increase his/her reading level and become a lifelong reader. Please continue to provide a quiet place for your child to read nightly, complete reading log, and return it to school on Friday. Starting in January, students who do not complete their weekly reading log will read during Fun Friday literacy time.

RAZ Kids - Reading at Home

Your child should have come home with a paper that explains how to use RAZ kids at home. RAZ kids is an interactive reading website that allows your child to practice reading books at his/her level. If you have any questions about logging on please email me at mespo@chariho.k12.ri.us

Guided Reading Focus

Students have been reading a variety of informational text. When reading informational text at home ask your child to point out a text feature to you. Informational text features are pictures, headings, captions, charts, maps, diagrams, and/or glossaries. Authors use text features to help the reader better understand what they are reading and learning about. In addition, the students have been learning to determine the main idea of a passage and identify the supporting details.

In December, we will be reading fables and folktales to identify the message or lesson learned in the story. Students will be asked to compare two versions of the same tale to identify similarities and differences.

Parent Teacher Conferences

We are looking forward to meeting with you on Monday, December 12 or Tuesday, December 13 to discuss your child's literacy progress. If you don't have a conference scheduled please contact us. Mrs Sposato -- mespo@chariho.k12.ri.us or Ms. Leddy -- Paige.Leddy@chariho.k12.ri.us

Vacation Reading Challenge

Please continue to keep your child reading and immersed in literacy activities throughout the days off in December. Please check the listserve for the vacation reading challenge to be completed during the break and returned on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.
