3rd Grade's a HOOT!

April 4 - 8, 2016

3rd Grade Update

Hold on tight, we are hitting the ground to run the last leg of our marathon to become fabulous 4th graders! Check out the information below.

SC Ready Testing - Mark your calendars!

  • April 26 - Writing
  • April 27 - Reading
  • April 28 - Math

These are the only state tests 3rd grade will take this year. We will not be taking SCPass like 4th and 5th grade. (Thank you!!)

Our class is in need of a few supplies:

  • Tissues
  • Clorox Wipes
  • Glue sticks

If you are able to donate any of these items to our class, we would greatly appreciate it.

We are currently reading aloud The Lemonade War. Students are working on brochures that contain a section for each chapter. These are being collected for a grade so students should be sure they are keeping up with their work. We are also continuing to read aloud The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have had the chance to look at several different versions of the story to make comparisons. Students will also be taking a look at different types of poetry over the next few weeks.

Current Skill Focus - Point of view, using text evidence to answer questions, theme and how authors use idioms, metaphors, or personification in their writing

Writing - We will be exploring poetry and writing our own

Encourage your child to complete their independent reading each night.

In Chapter 9, we will be learning how to work with larger numbers in multiplication and division. We will use partial products, lattice and traditional methods for multiplication. If your child knows their multiplication tables, you are going to see a big jump in their ability with this chapter.

Two eggs have hatched!! If you have not checked it out, be sure to do so.

(You can also see this one through UStream.)

We will also be looking at a variety of animal life cycles.

SC History

History buffs take note, we are starting the Civil War. Many of the students really love this chapter and learning about the causes and effects. One of my favorite parts is talking about the Hunley. Hopefully we will be able to watch some video clips that show when it was raised. It is really an amazing event to watch!

Other Notes

Don't forget to check and sign your child's agenda each night. Encourage them to write neatly so you can read what they should be doing. Every child should be able to communicate what they are doing in class.

Purple folders come home on Wednesday. Please make sure you are reviewing the papers and signing the folder each week. The folders are due back to school by Friday.
