Preparing your own Home Study Space
Procrastination Station: Tips to Get You Started (For Students & Adults)
While teaching my Study Skills/Organization groups, I often teach students how to stop procrastinating and get to work! Working from home (for students and adults) can easily lead to procrastination with the distraction of TV, social media, video games, and family all around us. Here are some tips I have taught with the help of the program, GoZen, that may help to change your procrastination to ACTION!
1. Small actions are way more motivating than thoughts. Just sitting around and waiting to feel motivated doesn’t always work for us. However, doing often leads to more doing. Thinking about the smallest action it would take to get started makes it much easier to get the ball rolling. If you have an undesirable task to complete, ask yourself "what’s the smallest action I can take to get me started?"
Example: "My first action will be just to pull out my chrome book."
2. Setting implementation intentions, or “when-thens,” is like setting little alarms in the environment so you know when to get to work. By making a rule that’s tied to other actions, your brain will send little reminders that it’s time to act.
Examples: “When I finish my dinner, then I will put my dishes away.”
“When I set down my toothbrush, then I will put on my pajamas.”
3. Pre-commitment is a great way to prepare yourself for obstacles. Think about the things that usually cause you to procrastinate. Video games? Your phone? Feeling tired? Creating “if-then” statements for any one of those things will make you more likely to act responsibly if they arise. “If-thens” are usually created when you’re at your best, and you have the best intentions.
Example: "If my friend calls me to play video games online, I will schedule a time to play after my work is done."
Meaningful May Coping Activities
1st-5th Grade VJS Jr. Lessons
VJS, or Virtual Job Shadow, Jr., is an online program that teaches lessons about a multitude of careers. The state mandates that 1st through 5th grade students learn about 17 career clusters throughout their time in elementary school.
All 1st-5th grade students should have all grade-level assigned lessons for this year complete during their days off. Virtual Job Shadow Jr. (VJS Jr.) can be easily accessed by going to ClassLink. A link to VJS Jr. can be found at the bottom of their ClassLink Dashboard.
You will know the lessons are NOT complete by looking at your VJS Jr. Student Dashboard (see picture below). Any lessons under "My Assignments" must be completed. Once they are complete, you will see your badge on the left and the lesson will move to the "Completed Assignments" section. The lessons assigned to each grade level are listed below.
