CTE Director's Message
2023 - 2024 school year is all about taking Pender County Schools CTE to the next level. Our theme for this year is "Level UP". We plan to level up in impact, student success and community economic mobility. We have an amazing staff, programs, students and plans in place for this upcoming school year.
This school year we are planning to continue to engage our students in unique experiential learning activities that are preparing them for their futures. These activities are helping to equip our students with the tools to be enrolled, enlisted or employed upon graduation. What amazing opportunities we are providing for students in Career and Technical Education.

Topsail High School Public Safety Participates in Flood Training Simulation
Public Safety Course:
This course provides basic career information in public safety including corrections, emergency and fire management, security and protection, law enforcement, and legal services. FEMA certifications NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 are also a part of this course. Additionally students will develop a personal plan for a career in public safety. The course includes skills in each area, using resources from the community to help deliver instruction to the students. English language arts are reinforced.
Pender County Schools Extends Observance of Manufacturing Day by Visiting Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics in Myrtle Beach. Groups of Students from each high school took a visit and tour this past week, over 60 students got to experience this field trip.

Topsail High School DECA Shines at SouthEast Regional DECA Competitions
Topsail High School's DECA team, in an impressive display of talent and dedication, participated in a strong competition at the University of Mount Olive, and they returned with a treasure trove (GO PIRATES) of awards. With 47 students competing against nine other teams from Southeastern North Carolina, THS DECA showcased their excellence and determination.
DECA is an international organization that prepares high school and college students for careers in marketing, management, entrepreneurship, and hospitality. It focuses on providing students with hands-on experience in these fields, helping them develop essential business and leadership skills through competitive events, leadership conferences, and real-world projects. Students who participate in DECA gain valuable skills, experience, and networking opportunities that can be beneficial for their future careers.
The impressive list of awards reflects the quality of students and teachers at Topsail High School. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mrs. Denna Taylor and Ms. Siobhan Fargo for their invaluable assistance and guidance throughout the journey.

Apparel & Accessories Marketing:
- Lane Schott earned a place in the Top 10% for Test Score.
Entrepreneurship:
- Anthony Drescher displayed remarkable skills by securing the Top 3 Test Score.
- Abigail Holloman not only clinched a spot in the Top 10% for Test Score but also achieved 2nd Place in role play.
- Tanner Kereszturi achieved a place in the Top 10% for Test Score.
- Oscar Phillips also secured a place in the Top 10% for Test Score.
- Wesley Rhinehart excelled with a Top 10% Test Score and an impressive 1st Place in role play.
Principles of Marketing:
- Kaili Grenier stood out with a Top 10% Test Score.
- Kohl Pierson displayed excellence with a Top 10% Test Score and a 3rd Place in role play.
Sports & Event Marketing:
- Lucas Curtis showcased his skills with a Top 4 Test Score.
- Luke Husby achieved a place in the Top 10% for Test Score.
- Samuel Kessel secured an outstanding 1st Place in role play.
- Mack Woest made his mark with a Top 10% Test Score and a 3rd Place in role play.
Quick Service Restaurant Management:
- Kailani Fisher was among the Top 10% for Test Score and emerged as the 2nd Place Overall winner.
- Dashel Hoffman displayed remarkable skills with a Top 10% Test Score and a Top 3 Test Score.
- Clara Smith excelled with a Top 10% Test Score and a Top 3 Test Score.
These accomplishments are a testament to the dedication, hard work, and talent of THS DECA students. Congratulations to the entire THS DECA team on their outstanding achievements!

Portrait of a Graduate
Portrait of a Graduate
An initiative led by the N.C Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to define the skills and mindsets students need for success after high school has been unfolding since March. Now, with the help of 1,200 North Carolinians across the state, this grassroots-informed Portrait of a Graduate has been finalized.
Revealed October 18th the result of that effort – known as the Portrait of a Graduate – aims to ensure that North Carolina students are well equipped for the broadest range of postsecondary opportunities. Aligning with State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Catherine Truitt’s 2022 focus on the “Year of the Workforce,” the Portrait can be adopted by schools and districts to better prepare the state’s 1.5 million students for civic life, career or college.
As determined by the design teams that were part of the initiative, the statewide Portrait identifies seven competencies that students should possess upon graduation from high school to help them thrive in the 21st century.
These include:
- Adaptability
- Collaboration
- Communication
- Critical Thinking
- Empathy
- Learner’s Mindset
- Personal Responsibility
My Future NC Data
PCS CTE's vision of ensuring that students are enrolled, enlisted or employed are aligned with My Future NC and House Bill 664. To ensure that the state remains economically competitive, the state shall ensure that by the year 2030, 2 million 16 to 24 year olds will have earned a recognized industry credential or post-secondary degree.
