Lafayette Update

Parent Update: October 7th

National Walk to School Day

Join LAF as we participate in the 26th National Walk & Roll to School Day on October 12th. Whether addressing the need to make routes to school safer or encouraging children to be more active, this event is a great way to get a group of friends together and arrive to school together on a sunny Fall morning.

Week of Respect Thanks

Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who were able to participate in our International Week of Respect. We were so impressed by the presentations, as well as how intrigued our students were to learn about the different cultures of their classmates. We know how important this work is to continue throughout the year. Stay tuned for how we will continue to highlight our diverse student population throughout the year on LAF Live.

5th Grade Families

Students who are interested in applying for one of the Lafayette Musical Crew positions should use THIS FORM to apply with a parent. Please note that this process is a lottery and everyone who applies will not necessarily be accepted. Additionally, linked in the form description are rough outlines for Build Crew and Stage Crew meetings. Please look these over before applying. The form will close on October 11th at 8pm.

Students who are accepted into the crew will be notified by Wednesday, October 12th. Questions? Email Miss Goodstein and Mrs. Kraemer.

Home School Connection

On Monday, your child brought home their first Home School Connection homework, which highlighted the work we did through the month of September in our Character Periods and at Jeff Lake. My goal for the Home School Connection homework is to keep you abreast of the work we are accomplishing in our Character Periods to support the social emotional development of our students. The Home School Connection will be assigned on a Monday and due on the following Friday. It should be done with a parent and it is okay if parents write out the responses, too.

Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair is upon us! This year's Book Fair will run from Thursday, October 20 – Thursday, October 27th. Our students will be previewing books on 10/20 and 10/21 and creating a wish list to share with you. The following week they will visit the Book Fair to buy the books that you approve. Parents will also have the opportunity to come in to purchase books in the afternoon during Parent Teacher Conferences. The Book Fair closes at 3:00 p.m. each day.

FAMILY NIGHT

We are also pleased to announce the continued tradition of Family Night! Family Night

is Wednesday, October 26th from 4PM-8PM, during which time you are encouraged to

come purchase books with your child and also visit the Mexican Spice and Sam the Ice Cream Man food trucks.

And please don’t forget about our spectacular teachers. Come check out their wish lists, and make sure their classrooms are filled with a wide array of books from brand new and favorite authors alike!

IMPORTANT:

  • This year, Scholastic will be collecting a state tax (NJ 6.625%) on each item purchased, which has changed from previous years where the items were rung up tax-free. We are including a tax chart for your convenience. Please see the chart.
  • We highly suggest setting up an eWallet for your child through Lafayette’s Scholastic Home Page, which you can find on Scholastic.com. Please click here to set up your ewallet. All unused funds will transfer to your account after the Fair is over and will remain there as a “gift card” balance. It can be used on the Online Fair, Book Clubs, Teacher Store, or be rolled over to a new eWallet for the next Book Fair. It never expires.

VOLUNTEER:

We greatly appreciate any time you can donate to help our students have a wonderful fair! If you have any questions, please reach out to Kelly Sachs at ksachs10@gmail.com or Ananya Holland at adash3@gmail.com

We look forward to seeing you and your children at Book Fair! What better way to spend

the crisp days of fall then curled up immersed in an amazing story!

Meet the LAF Band Director & Library Media Teacher

Jennifer Cifrodella

Jennifer Cifrodella is our library media specialist. She has an elementary teacher certification, library media specialist degree, and a Master's in Reading. Mrs. Cifrodella has been teaching in Chatham since 1995! She started out at Milton Avenue and came to Lafayette in 2010. Mrs. Cifrodella's library program is designed to cover not only literature but educational technology, inquiry, investigation and research, and her favorite, digital citizenship. You might hear an infamous story or two of her latest scam attempt or social media mayhem! The Library Media Center may be located in the furthest corner of our school, but it is the hub where many amazing things happen beyond book borrowing. Mrs. Cifrodella leads The Broadcast Club and creates fun-loving staff videos found on YouTube. She also enjoys gardening, road tripping, and making videos.

Emily Gaul

Miss Gaul is in her second year as the Band Director at Lafayette School. Before coming to Chatham, she spent three years as an elementary and middle school Band Director in Mahwah, NJ. Her love of music began in elementary school when she discovered the joy of playing the flute and making lifelong memories through band. She developed a passion for teaching through working with various high school marching bands across the state and teaching private lessons. For her, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing students develop a love of music and a passion for working together to achieve something amazing! The band room is a place where students can be anyone they want to be; they can be musicians, performers, composers, creators, explorers, risk takers, teammates, and more! She cannot wait for another year of music making with the Lafayette Band family!
