At CHHS this week, there has been a ShelterBox tent located in the Panther Den...can you better explain what that is and how it can better benefit communities in need?

That tent is a part of a ShelterBox kit. We've had it up this week to raise awareness for the organization because although it is an incredible organization, it is unfortunately not very well known, and all funds are raised through donations. What ShelterBox does is it sends out first responders, all of which are volunteers (there are only 9 staff members total), to assess what is needed in a disaster area. Once the need has been determined (this occurs rapidly), ShelterBox sends out customized kits to the area. These kits include a tent, which can withstand 70 mph winds and 6 inches of water and generally hosts an entire family, a water filtration system, a solar powered light, a wood-burning stove, tools, and other items one needs to survive. These kits are not one-size-fits-all; supplies such as mosquito netting or emergency blankets are added depending on the situation. An activity kit is also included for children that have fallen victim to disasters. These greatly benefit the communities because even though the first aide need is usually met by other organizations, these people still need a place to live and a means of continuing their life once first responders leave, which ShelterBox provides. Once the initial need has been met, ShelterBox sends a 'school in a box' which contain school supplies to help begin reinitiating the schools in places that no longer have them. Often times these accommodations are better than what the people had before, so there are many people in Haiti and other places that are known to still be living in these tents. Also, ShelterBox supplies the victims with the tents personally and gives them deeds of ownership so that the government cannot come back later and take away these tents. Another one of my favorite things about ShelterBox is that over 95% of donations go directly to help those in need, and not going into anyone's pockets - so this organization is truly aiming to better the lives of natural disaster and crisis victims.
