Parsons Celebrates Black History Month

Though it began as just a week-long celebration in 1926, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Well, at Parsons, we are going to do just that! We are going to seize the opportunity to honor the contributions and sacrifices of Black Americans who helped shape our nation. Black History Month gives educators, parents and teachers, opportunities to share the rich cultural heritage and triumphs. I couldn't agree more with Sara Clarke Kaplan, the executive director of Antiracist Research and Policy Center in Washington, D.C. who states, "There is no American history without African America history."

It's important for us to share in this celebration here at Parsons. Each day on the morning announcements, we will honor a Black American and share the important role he or she has played to our wonderful country. We have encouraged students to research and share their learning with us so we can highlight their contributions. We are also excited for our Parsons' 2nd Annual Black History Month Door Decorating Contest. This year's theme, "A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture" will take life on each classroom door. The doors will be judged by a panel of parent judges on Tuesday, February 22. Doors will be judged on Creativity, Attention to Theme, and Student Participation. Winners will be announced on Friday, February 25th and the winning classes will receive a pizza party!

RBES Parent Perception Survey

Your feedback is important! The Results Based Evaluation System (RBES) Parent Perception Survey helps us to gather feedback from parent/guardians about the quality of education that each school is providing. The results are summarized across all parent/guardian responses to the survey and are used to provide feedback to schools about their performance. Last year's survey results presented we needed to do more to acknowledge the efforts of our students so now we have the Cub of the Month where a student from each classroom is recognized for their ROAR behaviors and receives a gold paw award. We also host Awards Day quarterly for each grade level where we recognize student citizenship, achievement, and academic growth.

Your voice matters and your participation helps to continuously improve our school. Thank you in advance for taking the survey. The survey will open on Friday, February 11th at 8:00am and close on Thursday, March 3rd at 11:59 pm. To access the survey, GCPS will be sending a link via SchoolMessenger that is specific to Parsons.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

It's National School Counselor Week

Let's Celebrate our AMAZING School Counselors

Look to see what we have planned to say "Thank You" to our school counselors. Ms. Vosough and Ms. Maxwell deliver school counseling programs that improve student outcomes. They lead, advocate and collaborate to promote equity and access for all students by connecting their school counseling program to the school’s academic mission and school improvement plan. These two professionals deserve to be appreciated. Here's what we have planned...

Monday, February 7- Students will sign banner displayed in hallway

Tuesday, February 8-Wear the counselors' favorite colors

Ms. Vosough( 1st, 2nd 4th, and 5th grades) - Green

Ms. Maxwell (Kindergarten and 3rd grade)-Purple

Wednesday, February 9-Counselors attend District Appreciation Meeting

Thursday, February 10-Place notes of appreciation in their mailboxes

Friday, February 11-Special Lunch Delivery

We will be sharing the love on February 14th here at Parsons. Teachers will be sharing a list of student names so they can make Valentine cards for their classmates. Parents may send in 'store bought', individually wrapped treats for the class.

Mask Guidance…

When students returned to in-person instruction on Jan. 6, masks were required due to a HIGH level of community transmission. The district’s updated mask guidance is based on community transmission as determined by the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH). For the rest of the semester, families and staff will be notified via School Messenger each Monday afternoon about mask guidance for the rest of the week. Under the district’s current COVID-19 protocols, community transmission levels must be maintained at the MODERATE or LOW level for two consecutive weeks before district mask guidance transitions to “Strongly Recommended.” (Note that staff and students returning early from COVID-19 isolation would be required to wear a mask through Day 10, regardless of community transmission rates and the district’s current masking guidance.)

GMAS: Georgia Milestones Testing Dates

The Georgia Milestones EOG Elementary School Schedule is now available. Students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will take the GMAS beginning in April.

Schoolwide Reading Program: Biblionasium

Just a reminder that our Schoolwide Reading Program is in full force. We began in September, and it will continue through the end of March. Each student must have 2,500 reading minutes entered by the end of March to qualify for the reading reward in May. Minutes must be entered into Biblionasium. There is a help video on Mrs. Britt's Media Center eCLASS page. We have a monthly competition among grade levels. We want all of our students at Parsons to enjoy reading for pleasure and develop a love for reading. Please encourage your student(s) to enter their minutes into Biblionasium each week. The parent letter from Curriculum Night is attached for further information. In addition, your student(s) can continue to participate in the reading programs offered at the Gwinnett County Public Library such as Grow Good Readers, Feed Your Brain, and the yearly Summer Reading Challenge using Beanstack.

Afternoon Transportation

All transportation changes must be made in writing. Whenever you need to make a change to your child's afternoon transportation plan, please complete an Afternoon Transportation Change Form in the front office no later than 12:00 PM the day of the change. We will utilize this form to create the appropriate afternoon transportation pass. Please remember the GCPS Bus Rule: no passes will be issued for play dates, birthdays, weekend sleepovers, etc. For security reasons, we DO NOT accept transportation changes through phone calls or emails.

Student Check Out

Anyone checking out a child must present photo identification and be listed in our system as someone able to have access to the student. If you need to make changes to your list of approved emergency contacts, you may make changes on the Parent Portal or stop by the office to update this information. As a reminder, students may NOT be checked out after 3:00 PM. For assistance in updating contact information on the Parent Portal, please visit

All Pro Dads

All Pro Dads is seeking a male guardian to lead the amazing program beginning Fall 2022. From current All Pro Dads Team Captain Josh Holt:

I have had the honor of being the All Pro Dads Team Captain at Parsons ES for the past 6 years. Those Friday morning breakfasts/gatherings with my boys and many of your families have been the highlight of my time at Parsons. Being that my youngest son will be heading to middle school next year, I would love to “pass the torch” to an All Pro Dad (or two) to continue this great program at Parsons ES. Please feel free to reach out to me at 678-687-0195 or if you are interested and/or have any questions.
