Principal Post
Dear Dena'ina Families,
Our first ever community garden will be built on Saturday, May 18th from 10am until we're finished! If you would like to be a part of building the boxes and loading them with soil before kids plant potatoes and cabbages, please join us! If you can, bring garden gloves, drills, and shovels.
I would like to thank Mr. Bowlan, Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Stewart, Samantha Rice and Steve Brown from UAF Cooperative Extension services for helping this become a reality. Their time and effort is very much appreciated!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Everett

FAMILY FITNESS CHALLENGE
Dena’ina Families,
Our student athletes are working so hard at learning how to stay fit and make healthy choices, and one of these ways is with our Monthly Healthy Futures Logs. This fitness challenge includes trying to stay active each and every day for at least 60 minutes. If they have met this challenge at least 15 days a month, then they win a monthly prize sent by the Healthy Futures of Alaska organization.
For the month of April we would like to add the Family Fitness Challenge! Each time members of your family are active together for 60 minutes, log that activity on the monthly chart sent home with a letter. This includes going for walks, playing outside with the children, sledding, shoveling, skating, etc. Anything where you are active together as a family! In April, every family that logs 10 days of 60 minutes or more of Family Fitness activities together will get their name entered in a drawing to occur in May. Just turn in your family logs in the same way as your children’s individual logs! Copies of the Family Fitness Monthly Logs can be found at the front desk, or in the gym. There are 2 separate prizes available to win. Both are Family passes for 4 people to the Denali Fitness Center in Wasilla where the local climbing wall is located. You do not need to be present to win your award if your family name is drawn.
We cannot wait to see all our families making healthy choices together and watching our community create fun with fitness! If you have any questions about this challenge, please call, email, or come see me in the gym!

NEW SYSTEM FOR STUDENTS
The Matanuska Susitna Borough School District is migrating to a new student information system (SIS) called Synergy for the 2019-2020 school year. This change in our SIS will better support education for MSBSD students. Our current system, SchoolMAX (iParent/iStudent), has become static and its functionality will not improve in the future. Our new SIS is responsive and will evolve with the changing needs of K-12 education and of our District. Transitioning to Synergy allows us to create a more user-friendly platform and optimize operating costs while we continue to focus on quality education for all students. Online registration will begin in early July 2019 and the District will reach out directly to families when registration is open. For additional information, visit www.matsuk12.us/synergy, contact your school’s administration, or contact Reese Everett/Dina Henderson in the Office of Instruction 746-9212.”

The state is currently working on solutions for the budget. The potential impact to schools in our district is significant as outlined in this infographic. You can see that our district is doing well - graduation rates are going up, students outperform the state and national averages on the ACT college entrance exam and 95% of operating costs go directly to supporting schools. The impact of the state budget proposal could mean the loss of 390 jobs and increasing class sizes. Legislators are working diligently in Juneau and like to hear from their constituents.
