Winter Park Band Notes
February 3, 2018
From Mr. Blackmer
Dear Band Families,
Thank you to everyone for an extremely successful Door-2-Door fundraiser this past Saturday! Obviously, to make something like Door-2-Door happen as successfully as it does, there are a large number of parent volunteers working behind the scenes to plan. We all owe a tremendous thank you to Candace Griffin for coordinating and qualifying our drivers, Lee McBurney for planning all of the food and provisions for the day, Mary Beth Johnston for preparing the paperwork and coordinating the counting room, and Kathy McCrea for organizing groups with drivers and all of the materials to make everything work!
Along with our terrific parents, I'd also like to thank and recognize Eli Maulfair and the student Operations team who helped out after school on Friday, and arrived extra early on Saturday to help set-up!
Of course we could not make Door-2-Door work without our parent money counters, meal servers, uniform volunteers, and our drivers, including: Kate Adams, Jason Bailey, Amy Barcus, Ruth Behrle, Kate Brietz, Brandy Camacho, Jane Claus, Richard Clemons, Stacey Cox, Ellen DeLoach, Lisette Dennis, Chris Doig, James Flood, Brian Goodwin, Ed Harris, Jessica Hautzenroeder, Sarah Heise, Carrie Henderson, Janet Henson, Chuck Jackson, Laura Jackson, James Johnston, Shandra Jones, Jackie Kuczajda, Rob Kuczajda, Gerardo Lindauer, Shaila Mandke, Jay McPherson, Ethen Anne Miles, Page Murray, Aram Nazarian, Jen Negron, Trisha Paster, Brandie Reid, Brian Ribaric, Kristina Rolls, Amy Skena, Charles Stone, Lisbeth Torres, Steve Thomas, Trina Wilcox, Sharon Flood, Maureen Dufresne, Nancy Stephens, Sunita Patil, Melanie Maulfair, Heather Ribaric, Kathy Bletz, Dana Adkinson, Willson McBurney, Carey Urbina, Ana Nazarian, Jenny Sullivan, and Mary Bernard.
We are most proud of our drivers and students who did such a great job representing the “Sound of the Wildcats” in our Winter Park Community! We have heard many compliments from community members who were very impressed with our students. This reputation is what motivates the community to donate year after year to the Winter Park Bands.
The final total from Saturday's Door-2-Door donations was $25,060.52! This is the highest one-day take in the past five years, and it is only the beginning. Over the next several weeks, we will continue to bring in online and mail-in donations. In the past, these "post-event donations" have typically brought in an additional $2,000 - $3,000, so our final D2D take may be closer to $28,000! That's an impressive fundraiser! We should have student/parent volunteer shares figured out by the end of this week, and it will be announced by way of an e-mail and next Sunday's newsletter.
In addition to Door-2-Door last week, we also kicked-off our Band Mattress Sale this past Wednesday with a student orientation by our fundraiser representative, Gregg Wallace. See the information below with all of the details and flyer information.
All the Best,
Mr. Blackmer
Mattress Fundraiser - March 10
On Saturday, March 10, the Winter Park Bands will be holding our first Mattress Sale Fundraiser in our West Cafeteria!
The Custom Fundraiser Solution's representative, Gregg Wallace, spoke to all of our students this past Wednesday about the upcoming sale. One of the points that he stressed multiple times is that, the success of this fundraiser rests 100% with "selling the idea of buying a mattress" before March 10. It's critical to get the word out to coworkers, family, friends, and neighbors now - either through one-on-one conversations, or possibly through social media. Please consider using the poster below to spread the word!
The other image below is the referral flyer. This flyer is for students and/or parents to give out to potential mattress customers. They do not need to be printed in color, and mattress customers may "dedicate" a sale to a specific Band student on the day of the sale, with or without the flyer.
Every mattress sold benefits the Band students and the Program. For each mattress sold in a student's name, that student will a cash bonus (1 mattress = $25, 2 = $50, and 3 = $100). These cash bonuses are "real money," not credit toward Band fees. Gregg Wallace and CFS will cut a check made payable to the student to use however they'd like. In addition to this, the top selling section will receive a large portion of the total profits into their Band Accounts!
Again, spread the word!

Earn Band Financial Credit with "Restore the Roar"
4 adults and 8 students are needed to assist in parking cars for “Restore the Roar” at Showalter Field on February 24. You will be shown what to do and part of the donations received will be credited to your Band account. Volunteers will be needed from 5:15 PM - 7:30 PM. Please sign up through the Band Calendar on Charms.
Parents can support WPHS by coming out to Restore the Roar! There will be live music, food, and drinks located right on Showalter Field. Last year there were over 600 people in attendance. In addition to supporting Showalter Field renovations and school projects, the WPHS Band can benefit directly by sales and donations made in our name. Table sales in our name earn 10% back to the Band, donated baskets and items for the silent auction 50%, and sponsorship sales 20%. Information can be found on the Band website.
"Piano & Forte" Tri-M Tutoring
With the Solo & Ensemble coming up and Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble I and Drumline auditions just around the corner, Tri-M would to introduce to you the "Piano & Forte" music tutoring program.
As most of you probably already know, upperclassmen and higher-level ensemble students often help underclassmen after-school without asking for any compensation. "Piano & Forte" is meant to recognize these students and expand the available help to more students. Fortes are music tutors who can earn community service/CAS hours for helping the Pianos with anything music-related.
Please see more information and sign up here.
Amazon Fundraising Opportunity!
Even though the holiday season is past us, this is still an excellent tool to raise money for the Band every time you shop at Amazon. The Winter Park High School Alumni Band Association is a registered charity on Smile.Amazon.com, so please remember to use this unique link to shop at Amazon every time, and a small percentage of the sale (at no cost to you) will automatically be sent quarterly to the WPHSABAA account and then donated to the Winter Park Band Program. If we all use this link every time, we can raise funds on an ongoing basis to help the band! https://smile.amazon.com/ch/27-0964817
