The Hour of Code is Coming - 12/7-12/13
The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Anyone, anywhere, can organize an Hour of Code event. One-hour tutorials are available in over 40 languages. No experience needed. Ages 4 to 104. There will be 184,471 Hour of Code events around the world!
The goal of the Hour of Code is not to teach anybody to become an expert computer scientist in one hour. One hour is only enough to learn that computer science is fun and creative, and it is accessible for all ages, for all students, regardless of background. The measure of success of this campaign is not in how much Computer Science students learn - the success is reflected in broad participation across gender and ethnic and socioeconomic groups, and the resulting increase in enrollment and participation we see in CS courses at all grade levels. Millions of the participating teachers and students have decided to go beyond one hour - to learn for a whole day or a whole week or longer, and many students have decided to enroll in a whole course (or even a college major) as a result.
Why computer science?
Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. See more stats on code.org. Code.org tutorials work on all devices and browsers.
- There are brand new tutorials featuring Star Wars, Minecraft and Anna and Elsa from Frozen!
St. Paul students will also be participating in the Hour of Code next week. Some classes began learning to code this week. They are completing fun, and challenging, lessons at code.org and at Tynker.com. We will go beyond the one hour completing at least one of the courses available to us.
EdChoice KY - Scholarship Tax Credit Programs
Parents and families,
The 2016 Kentucky General Assembly is almost upon us. One important issue that will be brought up in Frankfort is Scholarship Tax Credit Programs. Parental choice is essential for quality education and scholarship tax credits will enable more parents to make that choice, no matter their economic standing.
Over the next few months, you will hear about this issue from EdChoice KY. The coalition is educating the Commonwealth on Scholarship Tax Credit programs which allow individuals, businesses and banks to contribute money to a 501(c)(3) scholarship granting organization and in return, donors will receive a tax credit to offset their state tax liability. The scholarships ensure that all students have the opportunity to obtain the education they deserve at a school that best suits their educational needs.
