Fulton Middle School Explo Classes
Mission Possible! - November 11, 2016
Thank you from your FMS EXPLO Team!
Mr. Chapman
6th Grade:
Students have been settling into routines and understanding expectations, and we are wrapping up on our first project. This week we will be creating torn paper animals, in a mosaic fashion. The students seem to be enjoying this process, and they are all doing a fantastic job getting started. I think they are excited to be moving into a different realm of Art and doing something that is a bit more open ended with choosing their favorite animal. I am always impressed with the results on this project.
7th Grade:
I have been tossing several mini projects at them lately and we are working on a secret collaborative project that we will unveil in the coming weeks. Students will also be starting an abstraction project this week that will challenge them to think realistically and outside the box. I will also be sending out proposal worksheets for their independent art project that we will start after thanksgiving and should take us out to winter break.
8th Grade:
Students are in the final stretch of their book project, and we will be moving on this week to a few new projects. The first being a four-panel project I call Blow It Up. We will be selecting objects and photos and drawing different areas and parts of that object and pushing the perspective and increasing the size of certain areas. This challenges the students with composition, and detail. It also promotes visual literacy, by looking at objects in a different way, and increasing awareness in what we see. I really like this project because it is a challenge for them, and they always do a fantastic job, because it it all in how they perceive things.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate in contacting me.
Artfully yours,
Mr. Chapman

6th-8th Grade P.E: With the amazing weather we have had, we have stayed outdoors playing Ultimate Ball. If weather permits, we will stay outdoors; otherwise we will begin our basketball and volleyball units.
6th Grade Health: Students are learning and discussing hygiene and how to keep themselves clean. We will look into how advertisements try to sell us hygiene products and things to look for when choosing hygiene products.
7th Grade Health: Students are busy learning the consequences of tobacco and building self-esteem to help resist peer pressure when it comes to trying tobacco.
8th Grade Health: Students have finished our unit over noncommunicable disease and will begin learning about the functioning and care of the human reproductive and endocrine systems.
Innovations:
The Board of Education has invited this class to their November Board Meeting on Wednesday, November 9, at 7 p.m. in the Fulton High School Library to learn more about what Innovations and the Tower Gardens are all about. I hope those students in Innovations, and their parents, can attend!

While some students have already met grade level goals, all students should practice to improve their skills. Students were instructed if they did not meet their minimum goal that they should practice at home. They may practice anytime at typingtraining.com. Students can even use their Chromebooks to practice anywhere they have an Internet connection. They all have their login information. If you have any issues logging on at home, please email me. You can monitor your child's progress at home and school by going to the reports menu after they have logged into Typing Training. Many computer students email to ask login information or for me to assign specific assignments on typingtraining.com. I welcome these emails and respond as soon as possible.
7th and 8th graders revisited their Microsoft Excel calculators, adding additional formulas. They also completed a November Calendar project that required formatting table, images, and text.
Ms. Glynn and Ms. Neudecker
6th grade band: 6th grade band is working on note names and fingerings still. They have taken their first playing test and were extremely successful. Please encourage your child to practice at home as much as possible. We are very excited to see how the students progress through the rest of the year.
7th grade band: 7th grade band is working on chair testing and receiving new sheet music for our concert on December 19. The students are doing awesome and I cannot wait to see what they do in the next few weeks in preparation for the concert.
8th grade band: 8th grade band has been working really hard on their new sheet music, and the students are so engaged in their learning. The students learned about suspensions and resolutions the other day, and now they are listening for it in every piece of music that we play! It is an honor to lead a fabulous group of motivated and dedicated students.
7th and 8th grade wire choir: Wire choir is starting our next round of pre and post tests for chord progressions. They have done really well and I am so proud of each and every one of them.
Cherrydale orders will be ready for pickup on November 17.
As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us via email at sglynn@fulton58.org or kneudecker@fulton58.org.

HORNET SINGERS:
Hornet Singers...though they be but few, they be mighty!
They have started the year strong with their first concert and will only grow from this point! We have been digging into our Christmas music...that's right...it's time for Christmas in the music classroom so we can be prepared to serenade you with wonderful tunes of the season in December.
The choir handbook and schedule is online for your perusal anytime. (www.fulton58.org)
HARMONY HORNETS:
We can not wait until this group gets to showcase what they have been so diligently working on every Tuesday! Our amazing group is made up of a mixture of 6th-8th grade (7th/8th band or guitar members) and has great energy and interest in making great music. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 3:20 - 4:15 in the FMS choir room (G07).
This group will make it's debut for the year in December!
If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact me at llehman@fulton58.org.
HORNET PRIDE:
We are moving on to our repertoire for the December concert now, as well as taking some time to refine singing technique! This is the beginning of the music learning phase, which means lots of hand signs and solfege work. I'm truly impressed the focus each student is demonstrating in class. Keep it up!
PLEASE REMEMBER that choir members MUST be in uniform at ALL of our performances this year. You may purchase the required polo shirt by bring $13 ($15 for XL) to Dr. Moebes. You will receive a receipt for your payment.
ARTS ALIVE:
We are off to a great start! Arts Alive students have been focusing on rhythm and beat. They have been working in small groups to compose short rhythm samples, and choreograph dance/movement that matches the rhythm! This is part of our review of music notation. We will have a test over this material on Tuesday. We will also be submitting our final videos to FMS teachers and staff for our DANCE OFF! Members of each small group will have the option of being part of the video that will be shared with FMS employees. Employees will select the dance crew who stood out above the rest! Excellent creativity in this bunch!

Change...
There was an incredibly HUGE event this week that will likely help shape and mold this country for many, many years to come...
Your students learned new things. (I know, shocking right?)
No, in all seriousness. We watched one of the most pivotal Presidential elections of our lifetime, and one of the most polarizing of any lifetime. We have students that feel extremely strong things one way or the other (mostly because they have loved ones that feel extremely strongly in regards to the situation). But something struck me today as I looked on my counter top where the returned books lay. Take a look at the picture above. Anything stand out to you? None of the books are planted, or staged. Just picked up 5 from the stack and laid them out there. Look at the variety of interests represented by these books. You think your students aren't learning things that cover an incredible spectrum?
What middle school student (or adult for that matter) chooses to read about censorship? One that is not only learning but equipping themself to apply what they are learning. With all of these books, there is an element of value that we can not overlook. So what if it's a fiction book, we are letting them learn to imagine and dream. So what if it's an Almanac, we are allowing them to look at goals that maybe one day they are destined to break through. One that that definitely struck me hard with this is the variety of interests, but the reality of change. I don't know that I can ever remember seeing a middle schooler take an interest in censorship, but I can guarantee you that they have grown in ways some of us can only imagine.
I hope with the events of the week, that we all have taken on the mentality of, "we're all in this together." As such, we need to cheer on our students, and watch them become everything they are destined to be. Embrace the change within them, fan the flame of what fuels them. Challenge them to be great!

FMS Guidance: Mrs. Garner & Mrs. Horstmeier
Students are Making a Difference everyday here at FMS! Keep bringing in those cans to "CAN" Mrs. Houf's office. The last day to bring in food is November 21st. Kids can make a difference in their home, school, community and even the country. So when your child asks, "What can I do to make a difference?", ask your child what ideas they have already thought of because chances are they already have an idea in mind. Below are some ideas to get the ball rolling...
Home: Making a Difference starts at home. Be respectful, help out with chores and siblings, and have a positive attitude.
School: Be an UPSTANDER!, participate in school activities, and keep that positive attitude going.
Community: The ideas are endless, but here are a few: fundraising through bake sales, neighborhood garage sales, birthday donations (instead of you receiving the gifts, have your party attendees donate to a cause of your choice), and car washes. Other non-fundraising ideas for the community include cleaning up playgrounds and parks and participating in community events.
Country: You DO have a voice so write to Senators, Congress, the Mayor and even the President voicing your concerns and ideas on hunger, homelessness, and the environment.
Stop by Guidance for more ideas!
The Guidance Office is here to help students and parents.
Here are a few ways you can reach out to us:
Mrs. Garner works with students with last name starting with M-Z and can be reached at sgarner@fulton58.org,
Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-L and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and
Ms. Jo is the Guidance Office secretary and can be reached at jwilliamson@fulton58.org.
Guidance Office phone number is 573-590-8208
