Palmieri Press: Life in 5th Grade
Engaging all learners for a fabulous fifth grade year!
Using technology to learn
The students are settling in nicely to our classroom routines. Students are encouraged to collaborate, communicate, and create using our Chromebooks and devices they bring into the classroom from home. I strongly encourage students to have their own earbuds or headphones, although we do have a few pairs to share in our classroom. We will be using the devices in all subject areas.
Words Their Way
We will be using the Words Their Way program for spelling. Last week the students took an spelling inventory that was used to help me place them in spelling groups. The Words Their Way program is excellent in helping to meet each learner at their specific instructional need in spelling. I will also be using the website Spellingcity.com for the students to use as a resource for practicing their spelling words. I will load the words for each group weekly. Most of the spelling work such as words sorts, writing sentence, etc. will be done in school. The students will need to review their spelling words at home to help prepare them for their weekly Friday spelling test. The students just received their first set of words yesterday, and they will have their first spelling test on Friday.
Math
Our math year started off with a review of place value which then led us into Algebra and the properties of addition and multiplication. I have placed two videos to date in our Google Classroom for the students to view as resources. Offering videos as a resource has proven to be successful over the last few years, and I hope that your child will take advantage of all of the resources that are made available. Math fluency is very important to your child's success with current and future math concepts. Reflex Math is a website that is highly encouraged and used in our classroom. Continued practice at home is very beneficial to maintain and increase mathematical fluency.
Google Classroom and Class Dojo
Last week I sent an invitation to each of you to join our Google Classroom. This is a great way for you to see work that your child is doing, as well as resources and announcements that are posted.
I use the app Class Dojo in my classroom to help reward good behavior, as well to remind students to always do their best. Paper work was sent home last week to help you receive information from this site.
