First steps: check if something's wrong and what it is

Check the person's responsiveness by asking if they are ok. If they respond, ask what's wrong and proceed from there. If they don't, see if there's any external bleeding and if they're breathing, open their airway, and call 911.

After you've called 911 or ascertained what's wrong, it's time to help.

If the 911 responder told you what to do, follow their advice. Otherwise, here are some general tips for conscious injuries!

Choking - if they're conscious but can't breathe, cough, or speak

If someone is seriously choking, do 5 back blows (firmly hit their middle/low back), and then 5 abdominal thrusts (the heimlich maneuver). See the video below for instructions on how to properly do the heimlich maneuver.
