A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
“It was boring.”
When we reflected after our siyum on Sefer Bereishit last week, this was a comment that made the top of the list of what we might do differently next time.
“What could we do so it would not be boring for our guests next time?”
“Candy, better snacks, games, more time for the monkey bars, etc.” were all suggested.
What do all of those suggestions have in common? They are all things that 5 and 6 year-olds find "fun" and not "boring".
When we, the Morot, reflected after hearing our students’ impressions, we realized that we had not included a very important element in planning and guiding our students in their preparation for their siyum. Aside from focusing on basic hosting etiquette, we had forgotten to facilitate the step of empathizing, thinking about our guests’ perspectives and needs.
What did we know about our guests? What might they enjoy when they visit our learning space for the first time? What would they find fun? What could we do with them so that they could also feel the joy we were feeling about completing Sefer Bereisheit?
“Empathy is the new literacy: essential for us to communicate, collaborate, and lead” (Era of Empathy). Empathy is a core 21st century skill that we must explicitly teach and facilitate the development of in our children.
Over the next few weeks, I look forward to using this forum to discuss ways in which we can partner as parents and educators to develop this important life skill of empathy in our children.
To get us started, below is a short and powerful video describing the difference between empathy and sympathy.
Shabbat Shalom!
