5th Grade Music Notes

September 2015

Our September Learning Goals

  • I will be able to follow the rules of music while singing, dancing, and playing instruments
  • I will be able to READ MUSIC
  • I will be able to sing and write the words to the Star Spangled Banner

The Star Spangled Banner (unit!)

This month we have been learning about the history and story of the National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. We had fun doing a reader's theater about the battle that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the song (see picture below). Students took a pre-test to see how much they knew and many were surprised at the results! Our final test was to sing and write the words to the Star Spangled Banner. Visit the "Star Spangled Banner" section on the music website for more info and to hear the song: http://hobart.schoolwires.com/Page/5963

What Are "Mad Minute" Tests?

This month we started Mad Minutes in Music! Students have 1 minute to name 30 note names that they need to have memorized. Memorizing note names improves students’ overall music reading performance; it decreases the amount of time to translate written music to instruments and allows students to move onto more challenging concepts.

Although the grades will be posted in the grade book, hang tight- they will be averaged at the end of the semester for a single Mad Minute grade. We are tracking our progress so that we can see if they are improving on their music reading skills. Please support your student by helping him/her practice with flash cards or the optional worksheets that are sent home!

If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Amsler!

Choir Club is in Session!

5th Grade Choir has been meeting once a week during lunch recess. Our shirt orders were due Friday, October 2nd. You can print a copy of the shirt order form at this link: http://hobart.schoolwires.com/Page/6542

We have been singing the Star Spangled Banner on the announcements each Thursday. It is a fun way to start our day!

Our first performance is November 11 during the school Veteran's Day program. Due to the size of our student body, parents are not permitted to attend unless your child has invited a Veteran. We will be video recording our performances and posting them on the Choir Website. Stay tuned for more information!
