As you begin to discuss college and career options for your student, remember community service hours or volunteer hours can be an important piece of your student’s resume. While BISD does not require any hours to meet graduation requirements, many scholarship applications ask about the number of hours and/or what the student has gained from their experience. Volunteer hours can provide the student with valuable learning and leadership experiences. Student can find themselves having to make on the spot decisions and working out problems as they arise. In many ways, volunteer experiences can resemble on the job training. Students are also recognized at Senior Awards Night, if they have completed and documented at least 25 hours of service. Forms are available on the BHS homepage under Parent/Student. The form must be signed by the sponsor and returned within 30 days of completion to Mrs. Jernigan.
For students who would like the opportunity to learn more about volunteer opportunities, contact the Key Club on campus. Ms. Capaldo is the Key Club Sponsor and they meet every Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. in the Lecture Hall.
The next opportunity for service hours is the following:
Canned Food Scavenger Hunt: November 19th from 2-5pm
We'll be going in groups in our neighborhoods collecting canned food and hygiene donations for Harvest House. Meet at the school at 1:40 pm for carpooling.
Key Club also has a newsletter that showcases the students volunteering and provides information about the club. It can be viewed using the following link:

Don’t forget to pick something you enjoy. The time that we spend helping others can add enrichment into our own lives.

AVID Staff Spotlight
AVID Staff Spotlight of the Week:
Steffanie Johnson teaches English 4 (British literature) and Advanced Placement Literature and Composition here at BHS. As a non-traditional students she attended college at Tarleton State University and the University of North Texas. Mrs. Johnson received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a minor in English from Tarleton then earned a Gifted and Talented certification from UNT. She also obtained a Master of Education in Educational Administration. Currently, she is again a student at Tarleton working towards a Master of English degree so she can teach at a community college. When asked to share one of her favorite memories from college she said, “I was huge pregnant my last semester. My daughter was born on a Saturday and I graduated exactly one week later. While wearing my graduation gown and standing in line to enter the auditorium, a classmate asked if I was ever going to have my baby! Rather than embarrassing him, I responded, ‘I am not so sure’" When asked, “What skills did you learn in college that you have applied to your personal and professional life?” Mrs. Johnson replied, “I learned time management and to compartmentalize. Although I was soon to be a divorced single parent, I couldn't think about that when it was time to study and get my work done. Even as adult, one must possess the ability to put other things out of mind in order to focus on the task at hand.” When she was asked, “What advice would you offer to students who are looking to pursue an education after high school?” Mrs. Johnson said, “Choose a career that will earn you a living in which you can have spending money and time to spend it! Unless you are going to be a brain surgeon, don't go to the most expensive university. A degree is a degree. Go to school. There is no excuse not to, especially when the Burleson Opportunity Fund will pay up to two years of tuition for you! Become a lifetime learner; the more you know, the more you grow.”
