## Addition With Unlike Denominators Lesson 6.1

## Common Core Standard - CC.5. NF.2

**Use equal fractions as a strategy to add fractions.**

## YOU WILL NEED

**PAGE 245 FROM TEXTBOOK**

**P121 FROM THE ASSIGNMENT BOOK**

**PENCIL**

## LEAST COMMON DENOMINATOR

## First Trick to Adding Unlike Denominators

**Look at the SMALLEST denominator and ask "Can I get the LARGER DENOMINATOR IF I MULTIPLY?"**

## EXAMPLES OF TRICK 1

**2/8 + 1/4**

**4/5 + 1/15**

## Second Trick to Adding with Unlike Denominators

**Find the LEAST COMMOM DENOMINATOR (LCD).**

**To find the least common denominator, simply list the multiples of each denominator (multiply by 2, 3, 4, etc. out to about 6 or seven usually works) then look for the smallest number that appears in each list.**

**Example: Suppose we wanted to add 1/5 + 1/6 + 1/15. We would find the least common denominator as follows…**

**First we list the multiples of each denominator.**

Multiples of 5 are 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40,…

Multiples of 6 are 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48,…

Multiples of 15 are 30, 45, 60, 75, 90,….**Now, when you look at the list of multiples, you can see that 30 is the smallest number that appears in each list.****Therefore, the least common denominator of 1/5, 1/6 and 1/15 is**__30.__

## 3rd Trick to Adding with Unlike Denominators

**Multiply the two denominators together.**

## Examples of Trick 3

1/2 + 3/5

## REDUCING FRACTIONS

## STEPS TO REDUCING FRACTIONS

__EXAMPLE - 6/12 = 1/2__

**1. ASK YOURSELF "IS THE NUMERATOR HALF OF THE DENOMINATOR. **

**IF "YES" THE FRACTION WILL REDUCE TO 1/2.**

__EXAMPLE - 4/12 = 1/3__

**2. ASK YOURSELF IF THE NUMERATOR WILL DIVIDE INTO THE DENOMINATOR. **

**IF "YES" DIVIDE BOTH THE NUMERATOR AND DENOMINATOR BY THAT NUMBER. **

**4**** 4 1**

**12 4 3**

__EXAMPLE - 6/8 = 3/4__

**3. IF 1 & 2 DO NOT WORK THEN YOU HAVE TO FIND THE "GREATEST COMMON FACTOR" THAT WILL GO INTO THE NUMERATOR AND DENOMINATOR.**

**6 2 3**

**8 2 4**
