The Nordtvedt News

Welcome to 5th Grade at Eagle Creek Elementary!

A Great First Week!

I hope that you heard about our great first week of school! We worked hard to get to know each other this week, and our brown bag speeches were fantastic!

Introduction to Our Classroom:

Each week, I'll be sending "The Nordtvedt News" to your family with what will be working on in school, reminders of upcoming events, and anything else that pertains to our class. Hopefully you find this informative and helpful.

Please check your child's agenda each night for daily assignments, upcoming projects, and changes in our schedule. Please initial at the bottom of the day's assignments. This is a great way for you to check-in with your child and can help them to stay on top of their workload.

Any homework that comes home, is work that was not completed at school. I give students time in class to work on anything I assign. So, if you are seeing a lot of homework coming home each night, it might be a good idea to have a conversation about time management.

I'll be adding more information to my weekly newsletters about our room as the school year goes on. Also, we will be having our "Classroom Connections" night on September 15th to share more information about our classroom.

The First Day of 5th Grade!

What are we working on in our classroom this week?

Character Education: Overview of basic school safety and general expectations

Reader's Workshop: launching our reader's workshop. Students should always have a chapter book to read at school (from our media center, home, my classroom library, the public library, etc.)

Spelling/Word Study: Week #2 (you didn't miss week #1...the school district has chosen which lessons are most important for students to complete, which means that we will not complete every word study week's lesson). Students will typically receive their list on Mondays and then will have a test on Fridays. Please encourage your child to study his/her words each night.

Writer's Workshop: launching our writer's workshop

Math: Math Fluency

Science: Unit 1 - How Scientists Work

Social Studies/Health: these subjects are taught by Mrs. Kornder. Please check your child's agenda daily to see if they have homework in this area.
