Learning Labs

This week in learning labs students are celebrating friendship and love! We had so much fun stamping with carnations, using recycled cardboard tubes as heart stampers, experimenting with color blotting using water colors, creating friendship posters during outdoor learning labs. In writing workshop we are creating our own stories about fairies. Some students have written about the tooth fairy while others are creating their own fairy in colorful fairy houses and unicorns. Dramatic play has been busy with the Postal Office open from 9 to 5 sending mail and packages to our friends and family! Students are learning to create letters, and their own unique postage stamps! We have created friendship posters and discussed what friendship means to us and what we enjoy doing with our friends. The sweet smell of citrus filled our outdoor learning labs as students explored water sensory bins with limes, cranberries, clementines and oranges. Some of our little green thumb gardeners also planted new plants around our garden houses.

Next week we are looking forward to getting more in depth with our Edgar Degas ballerina inspired art!

School Garden Project

Phase 1

Through the generousity of the University of Florida and IFAS Extension-Sarasota County, our prekindergarten little gardeners had a heavy workload as they installed and prepped our new school garden! Phase 1 involved laying down a cardboard base to prevent weed growth, building gardening boxes, hauling and spreading soil and mulch. All of which our strong students did themselves. The morning began with a discussion about healthy eating habits, the importance of fruits and vegetables and insects that will help or hurt our garden. Then the gardeners began working! Students were beyond thrilled with the outcome of our fabulous garden beds. Phase 2 will consist of planting our fruits and vegetables for our garden on February 19th with our Master Gardener Miss Donna! Miss Donna will be guiding our gardeners along the way to keep a healthy garden in order to have a successful harvest! Miss Dina (Family Nutritionist) will be visiting periodically througout the next few months for projects and lessons on healthy eating habits. Sincere thanks to Miss Stacy (Program Coordinator) for bringing this fabulous program to our school! And many thanks to the Mota Family for clearing our garden site for our new garden!

Although this program works with prekindergarten students our teaching team will be engaging all of our students in projects inspired by our new school garden. We will need many hands for weeding and watering once our plants are established.

TerraNichol Academy Junior Kindergarten Program

We are now preparing for open enrollment for our Junior Kindergarten program for school year 2016-2017.

Our Junior Kindergarten Program was developed in 2010 based on the feedback from our parents already attending our program. Parents and Educators sometimes feel preschoolers still need time to grow and mature and feel that they will benefit from an extra year before entering elementary school. Others may just miss the Kindergarten cut off date and this program allows for those students to participate and be challenged in the junior kindergarten program. Admissions and the enrollment process will start February 1st, 2016. The deadline will be April 1st, 2016. We will open up 12 spaces for this program.

To be considered for the program:

1. Registration Form and fee must be submitted to TerraNichol Academy by April 1, 2016.(Applications submitted without the non-refundable registration fee will not be considered.)

2. Parents will renew their parent agreement & contract to make a commitment for the school year.

3. The Students 5th birthday must be before August 1st, 2016 or the student would be eligible for Kindergarten in the public school for the 2016-2017 school year.

4. Parents make a commitment to participate in school- to- home projects taking place throughout the school year.

About the Junior Kindergarten program:

Our teaching team strives to weave the Reggio Emilia approach to Early Childhood Education throughout our content areas for this full-day program. The Reggio approach is known for its small-group work, integrated projects, and hands-on learning, often with natural and recycled materials.

The school is built on a foundation of great educational thinkers and the philosophy of the world class Reggio Emilia schools in Reggio, Italy. Such programming is based on the belief that children and young people are powerful learners who think reflectively and who collaborate with one another as they ask good questions, explore their worlds, build problem solving skills and develop creative skills for twenty-first century careers.

In such a learning environment, the individual strengths and needs of students of all ages will become well known by the staff, enabling them to support and guide each child's unique learning patterns and passions.

TerraNichol Academy of the Arts offers a hands on exploratory kindergarten program. Students engage in math, science, literacy, and social skills through creative, meaningful activities. Learning takes on a more organic approach as teachers build off of each students interests and needs. While respecting the expectations set by the Department of Education curriculum is introduced with a creative, fun, and developmentally appropriate approach. The activities are centered around a common theme creating a cross-curriculum approach to learning. Students also have the opportunity to expand knowledge of arts and music through our unique enrichment classes including art appreciation and music appreciation, Zumba, creative movement, Spanish, yoga, gymnastics, drama, and culinary arts. We feel it is essential to have small work groups. Our classroom ratio for Junior Kindergarten is 1:12.

The Junior Kindergarten runs daily from 9a.m to 3p.m. Extended school day until 5:00 p.m is also available for families who may be in need.
