WHAT'S NEW? (January 23, 2015)

Hi Parents,
It was a short week with lots of learning!

As a reminder, next Tuesday, January 27th, there will be a presentation about "Erin's Law". Erin's Law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum in grades pre-K through 12.

Next week, we are back to our regular schedule of learning new spelling and vocabulary words. We will be testing these words on Thursday since we will be taking a Westward Expansion test on Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Sanchez and Mrs. Mirza

This week in math, the students finished Chapter 8. They learned how to read and write decimals to the thousandths in decimal and fractional forms. They also learned how to compare and order decimals, and rewrite decimals as fractions and mixed numbers in simplest form. We practiced applying these skill to real-world problems. The test will be on Monday and Tuesday next week. We watched the video below:
Rounding Decimals

Writer's Workshop

In Writer's Workshop this week we finished our memoirs and shared some of our stories. Ask you child to share his/her story with you at home. They all should be very proud of their work.

Reader's Workshop

This week in Reader's Workshop, the students learned more about Text Structures. They worked on identifying short passages and matching them to the correct structure. We finished the story, Mr. Tucket and started a new read aloud, Chained.

Just a reminder that the voting for the winner of the 2015 Rebecca Caudill nominees will take place in February. The students are encouraged to submit a vote after reading at least three of the nominees. If you are looking for a new book to read, these all come highly recommended!

Social Studies

This week in Social Studies the students learned more about the Western Movement. They brought in U.S. coins that related to either the Lewis and Clark Expedition or the
expansion of our country. They put in their "two cents" and wrote a few facts about the coins. They also learned about the War of 1812, the Star-Spangled Banner, and Andrew Jackson and The Trail of Tears. We watched a few interesting videos on all of these topics. The students divided up into different wagon trains to take part in a short simulation on heading West. They decided as a "family" which supplies to take and discussed other major decisions before they left for their journey. We will finish up next week when we arrive in Oregon. (Hopefully!)
