Reading with your child
Here at GLC, we will do everything we can to ensure all our students have access to effective instruction and a wealth of literature. With a year and a half of disrupted education, it is more important than ever to support your child at home with reading.
The best way to do this is to read together 20 minutes a day every day. This is effective for kindergartners, as well as 8th graders. The Children's Reading Foundation has put together a great handout describing why and how to do this. It is available in English and Spanish.
We also found a wonderful YouTube channel for parents about supporting good readers, Parents Help Kids Learn. Each 5-minute video focuses on an effective strategy of good readers and encourages parents and students to practice that strategy for one full week. This week we encourage parents to watch the first video called Parent Introduction: Reading with a Child. (Unfortunately, the video is availabe in English only. We are looking for comparable Spanish content.)
