Thomas Hobbes
He was an English philosopher during 1588-1679. his major work was " leviathan " (published in 1651). it expressed his principle of materialism & his concept of a social contract forming the basis of society. Though on rational grounds a champion of absolutism for the sovereign , Hobbes also developed some of the fundamentals of European liberal thought : the right of the individual; the natural equality of all men; the artificial character of the political order which led to the later distinction between civil society and the state.
The leviathan was made to demonstrate the context of the civil war. it had a use of emerging natural law, natural rights, and social contracts & social contract theories. it was a concept of human nature. governments are formed through covenants of the citizens, who choose to cede their rights to one leader of group of leaders who assumes their authority and makes decisions on their behalf.
