"SO there's this boy who will always have a piece of my heart. He calls me aunt!
Autism Awareness"
That was the poem. I hoped you liked it. I wear this shirt for my baby nephew. His name is B. I know a lot about him so I'm going to tell you about him. B. has autism. He is 3 years old. He likes my fidget toy that's a pop it. B. loves cares 2 and 3 movies but not the first one. He doesn't talk, but that's ok. He laughs a lot. He gives me high fives and points at stuff he wants. B. and other autism kids are so special.
From E.W.:
Good morning CES. Today I am here to tell you a little about autism. Autism is a spectrum learning disorder. If you know people with autism, you know to be very kind, helpful, and respectful even if they may act differently. You will want to treat them the way you want to be treated because everyone is very different in their own ways. Sometimes you can tell if people have autism and sometimes you can't but th important part is to be nice and kind.
Let's Light our Community Up Blue this month! For ideas how, check out: https://www.autismspeaks.org/light-it-blue
From K.W.:
I am K.W. and I am in Ms. Chieffo's third grade class. I am here to tell you about autism. When you see someone with autism don't be scared of them or nervous. It is hard for people who hav autism to strat a converstation or to end them, and speaking of conversations, sometimes when you are chatting with people how have autism, they don't look at you when you are talking to them. Some noises they hear are frightening to them also. I hope I could help you understand a little bit more about autism.
From J.M.:
"When I think of Autism, I think of it as a benefit not a disability. As Hans Christian Andersen once said, "When words fail, music speaks." This is one of the reasons my mom is a music therapist. What a music therapist does is help people who have Autism through music. My grandpa has Autism also.... So, wear the BLUE on Thursday and if you see someone with Autism, say "Hi" and you just might make a new friend!"
From L.C.:
Autism Speaks
"Always respect kids with Autism. These kids are very smart and never lie. So wear BLUE on April 1st to celebrate kids with Autism and spread respect, not hate. Always treat other people the way you want to be treated. Always care."
From M.S.:
My favorite quote about Autism:
"It is not our hearts that are different, it is our minds that are different."
It's all part of Light it Up Blue
On April 1st, the world will turn blue in honor of World Autism Awareness Day.
It's all part of Light it Up Blue.
Autism Speaks is an organization who teaches understanding and acceptance for those with autism.
All Chatham Elementary students are encouraged to wear blue clothing tomorrow, April 1st to raise awareness.
In addition, landmarks around the world will turn blue in support of the cause. Niagara Falls, the United Nations, the Empire State Building, the White House and state government buildings are just a few of the landmarks to glow blue on April 1 in years past.
On World Autism Awareness Day and throughout April, which is Autism Awareness Month, there will be events and activities to help people learn more about autism, which affects 1 percent of the world population, approximately 1 in every 68 people.

Kindergarten News:
This week we finished our rainforest adventure with Jack and Annie it was and exciting book. We spent a lot of time talking about the importance of the rainforest and how we need to work together to save the rainforest. We have some ideas that even children can do to be big helps such as recycling, not wasting paper and making posters to share ways to save trees!

Kids Teaching Kids
Next week, students will present their lessons about a selected U.S. region. As "practicing professionals", the 4th graders in Mrs. Macomber's class prepared learning materials (including notes, templates, posters, and a video) for their classmates. To start the process, we had to pack our suitcases, get photo ids, and rent a car for the "trip"! Below you'll find some of the hilarious (but typical) license photos!!
Art Room News:
Third Grade - Third graders began learning about portraiture. We looked at slides from a variety of portrait artists. We began working on specific features using charcoal and pencil.
