November Notes

Haunted Library

Mrs. Pickett's Reading classes are sneaking into the KNHS "Haunted Library" on Halloween and November 1st to hear some spooky stories as told by Mrs. Pickett and hear Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" read by Ms. Ball. All Hallow's Eve as celebrated by the ancient Celts over 2,000 years ago gave us the beginnings of some of our current Halloween customs and traditions. Check out lots of stories on Halloween and these ancient Celtic rituals in the library . . . if you dare!

Thanksgiving and Celebrations . . . Are You Ready?

Another one of my favorite holidays (Thanksgiving) is just around the corner. I love going to my sister's house and eating all the favorite foods like turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade noodles, casseroles, rolls, and pie that we all had as kids. Some of you may be more on the adventurous side, so if you want to try something different check out some of the recipes from any of the many cookbooks we have in the library.

If you are interested in some regional fare, check out Best of the Best from Missouri: selected recipes from Missouri's favorite cookbooks. This cookbook includes some favorites like Macaroni and Cheese Bake, My Old-Fashioned Dressing, Pumpkin Torte, and Caramel Apple Pecan Pie. You could also check out the Deen Brothers Y'all Come Eat if you are looking for a more southern slant on regional favorites, You can find such recipes as Three Cheese Potato Gratin, Peaches and Cream Muffins, Classic Holiday Baked Ham, and Ground Beef and Baked Beans Casserole. For more international fare, look At around the World Cookbook. This cookbook includes from Italian, French, German, Greek, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, Caribbean, and Asian cuisines. If you feel adventurous check out this cookbook from the American Heart Association so you know the food will not only be good, it will also be healthy. No matter what you like to cook or eat for Thanksgiving, whether you stay in or go out someplace else, take a few minutes to remember all that you are thankful for and all the sacrifices that have been made to make sure you live in a country that allows us all to celebrate times with family and friends. Enjoy the Thanksgiving Break!
