Spindletop

On January 10th, 1901, Spindletop struck oil sending an enormous 150 foot geyser of oil in the air for 9 days straight. That made Texas the trade center for oil. Spindletop produced about 100,000 barrels of oil a day for 2 years strait.

The boom and the break

The oil during the 1900's controlled the population of towns that had oil.Oil towns would boom with profit then break when the oil ran out. That led to the roads bogging up. And over population with little medical supplies, led to residents and prospectors getting sick and the disease would spread faster.

Spindletop stopped John D. Rockefeller's oil monopoly.

Present day spindletop

Spindletop still does small scale oil production, but it will never be as big as it was in 1901. Spindletop now serves as a monument of greatness in the oil company.

Word on the street

If you asked somebody in Beaumont TX , January 1, 1901, what the word in the street was they would say the Galveston hurricane of September 8. But if you asked someone on January 11, 1901, they would say the big oil well on the salt dome or Spindletop.

Impact on oil

The gigantic size of Spindletop helped create big oil industries such as Gulf and Texaco.
