Join our "River Rat Race" Reading Challenge
Dear Families:
Please join our, “River Rat Race” reading challenge as we promote building strong readers and the love of learning. For every 30 minutes read during the month of April students will be given a “canoe” to decorate and to enter into our “race” down the hallway. Our goal is to see how many laps we can make it around our school with our “River Rat” canoes. Special recognition and prizes will be awarded to the students with the most canoes and to the class with the most participants.

Making Writing Fun
Having children express themselves in written form is an important skill that we start developing in kindergarten and expand upon with each passing year. A great way to have children practice is by keeping a little writing journal. Children can write down "big ideas" they have from their reading on what they notice, feel, or predict. Children can also practice writing or drawing about different experiences they have had such as a family trip and/or about participating in a sport or activity. Some sentence starters could include:
I believe...
I notice..
It seems...
I infer...
I predict...
I am thinking...
I wonder if...
Additionally, children enjoy responding to creative writing prompts. Linked below is a website with a number of journal writing prompts.

Catch of the Day
Our School Support Noon Duty staff continue to be recognizing students in their, "Catch of the Day," program. This honor is given to students who staff observe demonstrating our school expectations of respect for self, respect for others, and respect for property during recess. Each day they choose one student from recess as the Catch of the Day who then receives a certificate, a stuffed fish for a day, and is entered into a weekly drawing in the "fish bowl" to receive a prize as Catch of the Week. Here are this weeks catches! PIctured to the right is our Catch of the Week- Liliana.
