Brookview Families,
What an amazing week of success at this week! Students are really showing CORE and making us all proud. During my classroom visits this week I witnessed our students practicing phonemic awareness with their enthusiastic teachers. There were kindergarten students using great vocabulary and judgment. Can't wait to see what next week brings.
Now a few updates:
Attendance: For the 2020-2021 school year, Warren Township has transitioned to a new student information system called Synergy allowing our parents and caregivers to have improved access to school information through the parent portal called ParentVUE. We are aware that at his time some students’ attendance records are reflecting students are absent, when in fact they were present. This is mostly the case for our students who are attending school VIRTUALLY on application days or in the VIRTUAL opinion full-time. We want to assure you that teachers are keeping accurate attendance records and that we are working to correct attendance records for all our students.
Warren Township Schools and Health Heroes, Inc. are offering FREE flu vaccines for children attending Brookview Elementary. These vaccines will be given, at a clinic set up inside the school, on August 25th at 9:00 am for students that are considered to be In Person students. Please return the completed Vaccine Consent Form to Brookview. If the form is not filled out completely, Health Heroes will not vaccinate your child.
School District Publications/News Media UseThe occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child's school. This may include your child's photo, your child's name or your child's work in district publications, newsletters, on school district websites, and in electronic/social media or in staff training videos. We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television, and radio) about your child's achievements. We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/political purposes. However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify your child's school office in writing that you do not want this type of information released.
Immunization Reminder: In order for our schools to be in compliance with the state laws regarding immunizations, please make sure that your student(s) have their updated information on file with your school's nursing staff. All student vaccines must be on file and up to date by September 21, 2020 to avoid exclusion. Please make your school's nursing staff aware of any upcoming appointments for vaccines, or if there are any medical or religious objections to your student receiving his or her vaccines
Also, PLEASE inform our nurse of any chronic health conditions that the school should be made aware of, and that your student's medical emergency information is up to date.
Warren students should be ready to change the world when they graduate and they will need the following six skills: Communication, Collaboration, Content Knowledge, Critical Thinking, Citizenship, and Resilience. Stay tuned for more information on these skills and dispositions.

Message from the Warren Early Childhood Center
The Warren Early Childhood Center is now enrolling children for both full day and half day preschool classes. ECC is a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited program and is rated a Level 4 center on Indiana’s Paths-to-Quality.
Our staff works diligently to provide a safe and nurturing environment so the social and emotional needs of children can be met. We also believe in learning through play. Play is an important component of healthy brain development. It assists with developing social skills, thinking skills, problem solving and self-confidence; all the skills necessary for children to learn both academically and about the world around them. ECC accepts CCDF and On My Way Pre-K vouchers. Please call Mary Crabtree in our front office to make an appointment to register, 317-869-4751.
Car Rider Information
We have made a slight change to the car rider procedure for this year. For both Pick up and Drop off, the car rider line will utilize two lanes to reduce congestion. See map below for details.

Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning Emphasis
At Brookview Elementary, we want our students to be strong readers! There are 5 major components to reading. I will be sharing information on each of the 5 components of reading over the next several weeks. Let's start with fluency.
What Is Fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read "like you speak." Hudson, Lane, and Pullen define fluency this way: "Reading fluency is made up of at least three key elements: accurate reading of connected text at a conversational rate with appropriate prosody or expression." Non-fluent readers suffer in at least one of these aspects of reading: they make many mistakes, they read slowly, or they don't read with appropriate expression and phrasing.
Many researchers have found that fluency is highly correlated with reading comprehension—that is, when a student reads fluently, that student is likely to comprehend what he or she is reading.
So how do we teach it?
Teacher Modeling
Examples of teacher modeling include:
- Teacher-assisted reading
- Peer-assisted reading
- Audio-assisted reading
Key point: Teacher modeling involves more than just listening to someone else read. Students must be actively involved 100 percent of the time and in a multi-sensory way.
Parents, you play a major role here as well. Allowing your children consistent opportunities to read to you is key. Every night, have your children read to you. This helps your child become a strong reader!
WHO ARE WE?
At Brookview Elementary school, we strive to develop and enrich students to their full potential. One of the ways that we do this is by focusing on critical thinking, content knowledge, collaboration, citizenship, creativity, and resilience.
