Why will this help my child and family?
I do truly understand how challenging parenting a child with a history of childhood maltreatment can be. When I first adopted my daughter, I thought that I was just being over-sensitive and people told me so, but I had trouble quieting that little voice inside of me that said, "something's off". Since that time I have parented many more children who struggled to let me love them. Many of the techniques that I had learned during my career and my education did not prepare me to parent these children. I knew something different needed to happen. I just didn't know what. I can not tell you how grateful and relieved I was 10 years ago when I started to learn about the effects of trauma on the attachment relationship. I later learned that when children in the first 2-4 years of life are hungry, scared, hurt, abandoned, maltreated it creates significant issues in the ability for this little person to control their emotions, behaviour and body. Life has given me opportunities to see this over and over again. I have travelled to orphanages over seas and held babies with empty eyes. I have rocked 7 year olds in my arms too terrified to go to sleep because of the memories that come back when their eyes close. I have felt hopeless, sad and at times angry because I didn't know what to do. For me the answers started to come with 1 book, The boy who was raised as a dog, by Dr. Bruce Perry and since then I have spent many hours training in the United States in the last 10 years to find ways to help children heal and families be able to live in harmony. I would love to share what I have discovered through the children with you.
