SAA VOLLEYBALL SEASON IS HERE!
Dear Parents/Guardians:
This past week our Sister Alphonse Academy community had the opportunity to reflect and honour National Truth and Reconciliation Day through prayer and discovering facts and history pertaining to residential schools. Students and staff honoured this day on Wednesday through wearing orange and participating in a classroom liturgy. Thank you to Mrs. Lobel and Mrs. Klak for organizing our in classroom liturgy and special bulletin board for this special day. Thank you as well to Mrs. Phillips and her leadership class for participating in the daily prayers and reflections over the announcements.
Students on our boys and girls volleyball teams also had the opportunity to play their first game against Elmer Gish! Both teams displayed excellent school spirit and were competitive and excited to participate. The boys team won 4 straight! The girls team won one game and the other two games were very close! Well done Knights!
Parents who wish to volunteer at the school, please see our website (www.saa.gsacrd.ab.ca) as the application is not sent through our office now, but is found online. Please see the volunteer information near the end of this newsletter.
Thank you as well to all of the parents and guardians who have been applying to be a volunteer at SAA! We are so happy to see that you would like to assist us with field trips and school events. We are always looking for lunch supervisors as well! If you have a few hours to spare each week, please email Mrs. Bokenfohr at lbokenfohr@gsacrd.ab.ca to indicate your interest in being a lunch time supervisor. Please note that a lunch supervisor is a paid position.
Take care, God bless and have a great weekend!

GSACRD BACK TO SCHOOL PLAN 2021/2022 - UPDATED SEPTEMBER 16TH!
Positive Covid-10 Cases within our schools
Positive COVID-19 Cases within our schools
GSACRD school administrators will be informing their families when a positive COVID- 19 case is reported. This will add a layer of awareness to the cases in our communities, allowing families to make decisions regarding their child’s health and safety. Please be mindful of the following:
• Disclosure of COVID-19 status is voluntary, although strongly encouraged. Families are not obligated to share and therefore, no communication does not necessarily mean that there is no presence of COVID-19 in the school or in your child’s class.
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools / September 16, 2021
RETURN TO SCHOOL PLAN 2021-2022
• Names of positive cases will not be shared and close contacts are not required to isolate. Communication will serve only as information only.
When a positive case is disclosed, school administrators will communicate with families of students who were in classes with the positive case. The whole school will also receive a more general communication. Families who only receive the general communication, would not have had a child in the class of a positive case. Please note that this does not mean that your child could not have had contact with the affected individual during unstructured times.
Parents of children who test positive have a legal obligation to keep their child in isolation in accordance with the COVID-19 protocols set out by AHS. Please check https://www.alberta.ca/isolation.aspx and adhere to the required isolation measures.

Literacy Interventions at SAA!
Grade 2 and 3 Literacy!
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools has partnered with University of Alberta’s lead researcher and professor, Dr. George Georgiou, to participate in the Alberta Research Network (ARN) Literacy Study. The study aims to examine the learning loss in grade 2 and 3 students resulting from the pandemic and provides educators with professional learning opportunities on research-based practices to eliminate reading difficulties.
Grade 2 and 3 students across the division will be assessed in the areas of sight word recognition, fluency, phonics, phonemic awareness and reading comprehension. Students at risk for reading difficulties will receive intervention programming designed by Dr. Georgiou and delivered by trained interventionists, including teachers and educational assistants.
We’re pleased to work in partnership with the University of Alberta while providing a structured and systematic approach to reading instruction. Dr. Georgiou has preliminary evidence to suggest that the interventions will be effective and help approximately 300 children overcome reading difficulties. We are looking forward to these literacy interventions starting during this upcoming week!
Volunteering at SAA!
Please note that once your forms have been approved and accepted in the office, the volunteer time and entry will be arranged through appointment, as aligned with our current entry practices. Thank you in advance for your time and support!
