Albany Refugee Roundtable-Roundtable] Upcoming workshops and citizenship class
Dear colleagues and others working with refugees and immigrants,
I hope this email finds you doing well. I’m writing to remind you that we have a workshop for parents tomorrow. While aware of cultural differences in child rearing, the topic is how to teach and guide children in dealing with money. The prior workshop on this topic for Burmese parents led to a very fruitful discussion. Please invite any parents of school-age children who speak English, Dari, or Pashto. They do not need to register in advance…just follow the zoom link in the flyer that’s attached.
I also wanted to give you a heads up that we will be offering an expert-led workshop on taxes. It will be held on February 15th with a Burmese and Karen interpreter. Watch for a flyer in the near future.
Finally, I want to let you know that the new quarter of Citizenship Preparation classes will begin on Monday, February 6th. You do need to register in advance for this class. Please refer to the attached flyer.

I’m writing today to give you an update on registrations for our summer Unit Design workshops to be held in your regions. The workshop to be held at Questar III in July has 21 registrants and the Mid-State one has 28. I’m confident these will double before we get to the summer. If there is anything you can do to promote these workshops in your region (email blast to principals/teachers in your regions), it would be greatly appreciated. You can find the information on these sessions as well as the link to our website below.
We’re also offering a workshop to be held at the Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES for Northern NY teachers, a venue which may welcome teachers from regions shared by your two RBERNs. This is our first venture to help offer workshops in Northern NY, where we have not been able to visit in the past given our limited staff. I’m hoping that Northern NY teachers, several of whom have reached out to inquire if an in-person workshop could be scheduled, will come out in force to support this and future workshops in this area. Again, if this is anything you could do to support attendance at this event with your contacts in Northern NY, it would be greatly appreciated! Unit Design Workshops for Checkpoint B (Summer 2023)
In an effort to assure that as many NYS world language educators as possible are prepared to revise their Checkpoint B curricula prior to implementation of the revised NYS Learning Standards for World Languages in September of 2023, OBEWL will host unit design workshops for Checkpoint B in the summer of 2023. Although the examples given will be for Checkpoint B, these workshops are open to teachers of any level (Checkpoints A through C). The events will run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (with a one-hour lunch on your own) on two consecutive days. Participants must commit to attending both days. Participants who satisfy the attendance requirements of this workshop will receive a total of eight (8) hours of CTLE credit. To participate, educators must register in advance using the online form. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis until the venue capacity has been reached. These sessions are offered free of charge, are in-person only, and will not be recorded for future viewing. Below are the list of dates and locations by region. Owing to a schedule that has obviously changed since I started sending this newsletter in 2004, I have for several years requested that when people ask me to publicize events, the request be accompanied with a title, hyperlink, and the text below. This is a time saver for me, and this policy has been listed numerous times. Because this newsletter has been a free service for two decades, I hoped that people would respect this request.
However, I keep getting requests that are not in the aforementioned format, most recently from an office in a New York State agency that has benefitted significantly from Noticias, in terms of finding contacts in areas where there are not large Latino communities. The individual in question kept making other requests for information that I could not divulge. It got to the point where I ignored the person’s requests.
Unfortunately, while I will be posting information about some events, like the Upstate Latino Summit, I will no longer accept posting requests from anyone. Please do not send anything. I appreciate the efforts of those who tried to adhere to the format I requested.

Description: The Equitable Family Engagement for Multilingual Learners series is for teachers, parent-coordinators, administrators, and other education related stakeholders. BILINGUAL SPECIAL EDUCATION VIRTUAL SERIES LED BY (DR.TAMARA ALSACE) AND (DR.GLISET COLON)
This professional development series focuses on the areas of effective programmatic, instructional and assessment practices in bilingual special education. This learning series will be applicable for classroom teachers and related services personnel as well as administrators and other school/district leaders and is based on a developmental model to support and sustain school leaders and classroom teachers through virtual workshops. This learning series is informed by the most current evidence-based research on the continuum of services for English language learners/Multilingual learners (ELLs/MLLs) with disabilities.
The series will be virtual:
The sessions will focus on preparing classroom teachers to implement the strategies discussed in the text and school leaders to lead the work and follow up on implementation of the strategies and practices presented to teachers. Each session will be held from 9:00am-12:30pm via zoom.

SUPPORT ED-PERSONALIZED ONE-HOUR DEMAND COURSE: SCAFFOLDING CONTENT INSTRUCTION FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS
Description: Our on-demand course purpose is to expand strategies and tools that support English learners (ELs). Course format self-paced (asynchronous) environment for busy educators, engaging voice over power point presentations and videos of classroom instruction. Interactive questions, activities, and frequent opportunities for reflection. Access to a dynamic resource-sharing tool (Padlet) featuring tools from our books for collaboration and turnaround training. One hour of PD, earn an additional (2)PD hours by completing optional coursework.

Title: Managing Our Implicit Bias: Supporting School Communities
Description: This virtual workshop will focus on developing a common language to inform discussion and work on diversity, equity, and inclusion, understanding where implicit bias comes from and how it is connected to larger structural issues of inequality, connecting the learning and unlearning of implicit bias to enhancing the support for English Language Learners, and learning intergroup dialogue techniques and how to develop the techniques in the workplace.

Title: Building Skills for a Culture of AccountabilityFacilitating Dialogues on Race and Racism
Description: This virtual workshop will focus on developing a common diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and racial justice language, identifying the five focus areas of empathy, awareness, vulnerability, navigating conflict, and thinking and acting outside of own lens, developing a theoretical and practical approach to using dialogue as a technique to apply racial justice practices, building knowledge, capacity, and skills on the connection between racism and inequities experienced by English Language Learners, and acquiring and practice skills navigating DEI and racial justice conflict through dialogue.

Introducing NYS RBERN OnDemand: A tutorial video-oriented resource to support ELLs across New York State. This repository of knowledge is a collaboration between all NYS RBERNs. This resource includes seven major categories to address the needs of ELLs:
