Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
weekly update
March 4, 2016
We had a great week! The Mobile Mining assembly was a big hit with the boys and girls! Their excitement lasted the entire day. We also had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss' Birthday with buddy reading, activities, and a fun treat from Victor John's Mom.
In reading, we are continuing with our essential question, "How are animals unique?" Students read a variety of non-fiction stories and noted details about the animals, what they eat and how they eat. Students then had to make a connection between two animals and identify what makes them similar. Students also learned about the very important job of a guide dog in the story "From Puppy to Guide Dog". Students identified the topic and key details to tell how the guide dog helps people with disabilities.
In math, we wrapped up Unit 5 with fractions (halves and fourths) and time (hour and half hour). Telling time to the half hour can by difficult for students. Please review that skill with your child and allow some time for additional practice.
As part of a "Green School" project, we are asking that each child bring in one half gallon or gallon plastic milk (or oj) jug (with lid) , washed, with holes cut in, which will be used as a bird feeder. Students should not decorate it or fill it. That will be done in school. (Similar to the picture below. Perch is optional.) Due: 3/14/16
Thank you!
