Blue Ash Elementary OCTOBER

Notes from our Nurse
Herb Tasting: Coming to Second Grade lunch on Thursday, October 26th - Herb tasting!!! Compliments of the Garden Team and Wellness Team Initiative
This is a joint Garden Team and Health and Wellness Team initiative to encourage the students to try out and enjoy the flavors of the vegetables they grow in the school garden. The second grade herb tasting is based on the Basil second graders planted in the Sweetwood Garden as first graders last school year. A nut-free pesto served on pasta using the harvested basil from the Sweetwood Garden will be offered to the students during their lunch period on Thursday, October 24th.
Here are the list of ingredients for the Herb tasting:
Basil, olive oil, garlic, parmesan cheese, cream and salt to season. The nut free pesto will be served on an egg-free wheat pasta
Vision and Hearing Screening update: October has been vision and hearing screening month at Blue Ash Elementary. All Kindergarten, First Grade, Third Grade and New Students to the district were screened for their vision and hearing. Parents sometimes ask why is it important to have your child’s vision and hearing screened. Vision and hearing is important for speech, language development, reading and learning. Even if your child has passed previous screenings, their vision and hearing may change. If your child passes the vision and hearing screening here at school, you will not be contacted by the school nurse. A vision and hearing screening provides only a snapshot of how your child performs on the day the screening was administered and is not a substitute for a complete exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Nor a substitute for complete hearing evaluation by an audiologist. If your child does not pass the screening, the parent or guardian is informed of test results by the school nurse.
Lice 101 review: Lice cannot jump or fly. They are transmitted by direct head to head contact with another person with lice or sharing items placed in the hair. Children should be instructed against sharing hats, clothing or hair items with others. Children should use their own pillows and sleeping bags when spending the night with a friend. Household pets do not transmit lice. Consult your school nurse and the Sycamore Student Health Handbook for more great information about lice. Here is a link from the American Academy of Pediatrics regarding best practices with lice management https://www.healthychildren.org/English/health-issues/conditions/from-insects-animals/Pages/Signs-of-Lice.aspx
Prevention is the Best Medicine: Good handwashing and covering your cough and sneeze are best practices to prevent the spread of illness especially the Flu!
It’s time to start thinking about getting your Flu Shot for this Flu season! The CDC recommends Flu Vaccine for all individuals 6 months and older. Check out the CDC website for more information regarding the Flu and the Flu vaccine at https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/freeresources/updated/fluguideforparents.pd
