# 4HA Weekly News

## Dear parents

First of all, I would like to wish you all a very happy Easter! This is a wonderful time of year, and celebrating Easter is humbling and inspiring. We enjoyed an extended Easter devotion, the Easter Chapel and a 'Resurrection Eggs' buddy class activity this week.

I would also like to thank you for the kind birthday wishes and gifts I received yesterday. My apartment now looks and smells beautiful, and the children's cards brought a tear to my eye. Special thanks to Chi Nguyen, Linh Dan's mom, for the amazing cake! The picture below doesn't do it justice!

We have a busy week ahead, so I hope everyone has a chance to rest and relax over the weekend. The children have been very concerned about the ferry disaster, so they will probably be very interested in keeping up with the news this weekend.

## Language Arts

In language arts last week, we enjoyed learning about similes, metaphors, personification and hyperbole. After discussing what these were, we had fun coming up with our own examples, and the children really showed their creative talents! We also studied conjunctions, and identified these in pieces of writing.

In reading, we spent lots of time in our reading groups. The children are enjoying their novels, and they are gathering ideas to blog about. Most of the children in the class were involved in extra rehearsals with Ms. Moon, and she has been very impressed with their commitment to learning their lines.

Next week, we will take part in some special activities for Library Week with Ms. Kersting. This will be an excellent opportunity to celebrate our love of books and reading. We will also practice using commas and colons, and avoiding run-on sentences.

## Math

Last week, we spent some time reviewing geometry and measures, in order to prepare for upcoming assessments. The children showed a good understanding of 2D and 3D shapes, and practiced finding the area and perimeter of a range of shapes.

Next week, we will discuss symmetry and measuring angles, and we will practice some problem solving related to time and money. The money problems that we will solve will help the students to understand calculations involving decimals.

## MAP Testing

Our MAP tests will take place next week. 4HA will follow the schedule below:

Wednesday 23rd April at 12.30 pm: Reading

Thursday 24th April at 12.30 pm: Language Use

Friday 25th April at 12.30pm: Math

Please make sure that your child gets a good sleep and healthy breakfast before these tests. I am sure they will all do a fantastic job!

Rehearsals are going very very well so far. We will have rehearsals for most/all students every day next week. Ms. Moon asked me to thanks parents for their support with learning lines at home, and to request that you continue to set aside some time to go through the script with your child. This makes rehearsal time much more productive. I sent a letter from Ms. Moon to all parents yesterday, please let me know if you did not receive the letter, or if you have any questions regarding its content.

## Upcoming Events

As well as MAP testing, we also have Library Week and Spirit Week next week (21st-25th April)

All students are encouraged to enjoy Spirit Week by dressing up each day with these themes:

Monday - Sport

Tuesday - Twins

Wednesday - Wacky

Thursday - Free Dress

Friday - Book Character

## Prince George Award

Saya had a great week this week, and finished off by winning the Prince George Award! Saya consistently tries hard in class and behaves well around the school, she should be very proud of this well-deserved award!
