Radio Waves

This wave is an electromagnetic wave that has the longest wavelength. Radio waves have the lowest frequency. This wave is not dangerous AT ALL! We use radio waves for listening to music on the radio and watching television.

Microwave Waves

Microwaves are the shortest wavelength of all the electromagnetic waves. This wave has low frequencies. Microwaves are safe. Humans use this wave for heating up food in a microwave and cell phones.

Infrared Waves

This wave is mostly associated with heat. Infrared waves have low frequencies. Infrared waves are safe but almost to the dangerous side. We use this wave to keep food warm after we cooked it and we use infrared lamps to provide warmth in bathrooms.

Visible Light Waves

Visible Light waves can be seen by the human eye because it provides us with color. Visible Light waves have low frequencies and is safe. We use this wave to see color and watch television with color.

Ultraviolet Waves

This wave cannot be seen by humans and it can cause us to have sunburns. Ultraviolet waves have high frequencies but not the highest of the electromagnetic spectrum. This wave is dangerous. We use this wave to treat skin problems and sterilize medical instruments.

X-Ray Waves

X-Ray waves pass easily through soft tissues of the body. This wave has high frequencies but still not the highest. It is dangerous. We use this to take x-rays of our body and to take pictures of planets.

Gamma Ray Waves

Gamma Ray waves have the most energy in the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Gamma Ray waves have the highest frequency. It is super dangerous. We use this wave to destroy cancerous cells and to create images.
