Conscious Discipline Tips
Dear Alta Vista Family,
We want to welcome you to the 2017- 2018 school. We also want to welcome you and your child to our School Family. School Family is a term we use to describe the classroom environment and is a term that comes from a program called Conscious Discipline. The School Family does not and cannot replace the home family; but it can, in partnership with you, help to create the best possible learning experience for your child.
Conscious Discipline is built on the premise of developing discipline within children rather than applying discipline to them. Within Conscious Discipline, there are Seven Powers and Skills that are developed within the classroom and school environment that will help your child to know that they are safe and they are loved. These Powers and Skills help them to determine what they can learn from the situations that they encounter.
Throughout the school year we will have a monthly focus to help teach and reinforce the skills within your child. For the month of September, we will focus on the Skill of Composure and the Power of Perception. The Power of Perception is stating that no one can make you angry without your permission and realizing that happiness is a choice. Within our School Family we will focus this month on take responsibility for our choices and learning from our mistakes. We will make daily commitments of how to be a productive factor within in the classroom or school environment. When a mistake happens we will have what we call an “Oops” and use them as a learning moment.
The Skill of Composure will require students to learn how to identify their emotions and feelings. Also, students will learn how to recognize what our triggers are and how we choose to respond to our triggers. It will also require us to have conversations about our brain states and where we are functioning. Are we functioning in the Survival State and feel unsafe? Are we operating in the Emotional State of our brain and are we feeling unloved? Or are we operating in the Executive State of our brain and are able to Problem Solve and learn from our mistakes?
The videos below are tools that can help you understand the brain states and what we mean by belly breathing and active calming.

Parent Involvement Opportunities
We will be holding a Community Transformation Meeting at 6:15 that evening in the library. We invite you to come give input on our Turnaround Plan.
Another way you can get involved at Alta Vista Elementary is to participate in our Campus Decision Making Committee (CDMC) meetings four times a year. At these meetings, we discuss the state of the campus, current problems and solutions, and make decisions about future plans, activities, and spending. We eagerly seek out your input and participation at these meetings! Our first meeting is planned for Tuesday, October 3 at 4:15 pm in the library.
We can't wait to see you soon!
