Polkadot Class Happenings
Week of September 3rd - 6th
What We Are Learning This Week
Reading
In reading this week, we will be setting reading goals and learning more about ourselves as readers. We will share our favorite books and discuss why we enjoy certain genres over others. Please remind your child to bring their favorite book to share on Tuesday! We will also be learning strategies for refocusing on our reading when we get distracted. You can support your child at home by providing a quiet and cozy place to read every night. Encourage your child to practice the strategies he/she learned at school.
Writing
In writing this week, we will be learning about where writers get their ideas and brainstorming writing ideas every day. We want to have a bank of ideas to choose from. We will pick one idea and begin writing our personal narrative stories in our writing journals. You can support your child at home in writing by encouraging your child to record daily life happenings as ideas for writing.
Math
In Math we will continue with our graphing unit. This week I will model making a class graph and students will create their own graph. Students will be expected to collect data, organize the information into a graph, and write questions about their graph for other students to answer. You can support your child at home by finding graphs in everyday life (in newspapers, magazines, etc...) and asking them addition/subtraction questions about the graph. You may also encourage your child to come up with their own questions to answer.

Other Important Information
Snacks - Just a reminder that our class is a Peanut-Free Zone. Please do not pack any snacks for your child that contain nuts. Should your child have a snack that contains nuts, he/she may receive an alternative snack. A list of snack ideas is available on my website.
Beginning of the Year Forms - If you haven't done so yet, this is a friendly reminder to return your beginning of the year forms as soon as possible. The forms came home on the first day of school in a large white envelope. If you know your child's ID number, please write it on the top of every form you turn in. This will help our office staff with entering and filing your child's information. Thank you!
Running Club - Running Club begins this Tuesday, 9/03 at 7:20 a.m. on the track behind the school. It will take place Monday through Friday. All students are invited!! This is a great opportunity for your child to get in some early morning exercise! Please remind your child, if they eat breakfast at school, that they need to eat breakfast BEFORE going to running club.
Grandparents Day Lunch - Grandparent's Day Lunch is this Friday, 9/06!! Forms were due to me on Friday, August 30th. Students always love it when parents and grandparents come see them for lunch. We will see you this Friday if you signed up!
Home Transportation: If the way your child goes home changes, you must call the front office at 512-464-6794 and let them know as soon as possible or send me an email or note letting me know. Otherwise, your child will be sent home the way that was specified Home Transportation form. We cannot legally send your child home a different way without your written or verbal consent--this is for your child's safety.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
