Counselor's Corner with Sra. Balmeo
Hello Patrick Henry Families! I am so blessed to be a part of the Henry community and to be here to support you and your children. I am grateful for our team and appreciate the dedication and total commitment that we all have to ensure that our students are safe and cared for during these trying times. As we continue through the next couple of months of distance learning, it’s important that we provide our students with some things that will help reduce their stress (and ours, as well.) The following document gives some suggested practices that I hope you will find helpful. I also recognize that we are all in different places and have different circumstances, so not all recommendations may be feasible for your family. Please reach out if there is anything I can do to help provide support to your child(ren) or your family. I am available via phone or email every day except for Wednesdays. Please feel free to call me at (562)421-3754 or email me directly at abalmeo@lbschools.net. Again, thank you for your communication, for your grace and for our work together. I am thankful for all of you.

Speech Therapy Talk with Mrs. Seedorf
What is Speech-Language Therapy?
Speech or language therapy works to increase an individual's ability to communicate clearly and effectively. This can focus on the physical production of sounds or the content of what is being said.
Is there a difference between ‘Speech’ and ‘Language’?
Yes! ‘Speech’ is generally the dominate characteristic in people’s mind when they think of speech-language therapy; however, both are equally important when communicating.
Speech: the physical production of sounds and sound combinations to make words. Influences our clarity of speech or intelligibility.
Language: the content of what is being said. Often distinguished by understanding, expression (sentences /grammar) and pragmatics or social language.
Speech and Language at Home
Children with language impairments have difficulties answering questions. Try these tips for asking your child about their school day.
• Asking a question, such as, “how was your day?” may be too broad & overwhelming. Try a concrete question such as, “What book did you read today?”
• Ask the teacher for emails about specific things your child did during the day. Knowing the answer to a question can better help you prompt your child.
• Try open ended questions such as “tell me about art today” to encourage more than one-word responses.
