Elements of Fiction

"Carrie" by Stephen King
Character
A character is a person in the story, poem, or play.
The character I chose from this book to talk about was Carrie White. She was the protagonist. She was a very quite to herself person. She wasn't very social. She was the odd girl at school. All she wanted to do is fit in and be like everyone else. She was often made fun of. She was raised by a very abusive Christian woman who believed in sin and punished her quite often for unreasonable things that were just part of life. Carrie was pale, skinny, and had light reddish hair, and she wasn't very wealthy.
Setting
Setting is the time or place of a story or play.
The book Carrie takes place in Chamberlain, Maine around 1974. At Thomas Ewen High School where Carrie went to school. The book takes place right before prom. Everyone was getting invites and deciding what they were going to wear and what they were going to do afterwards.
Plot
The plot is a series of related events that make up a story or drama.
In this book a young girl named Carrie White, a senior in high school later discovers she has a supernatural ability. She struggles to fit in with the crowd and to become more social. She also runs into problems with getting made fun of and proving to her abusive Christian mother that she isn't committing sins that those "sins" are part of the life and are inevitable. All this leads up to a horrific disaster no one was expecting on the night of prom.
Theme
Theme is the central idea of work of literature.
The theme of this book would mostly be bullying and revenge and karma. what goes around comes around. Do to others as you've been treated.
Tone
Tone is the attitude a writer takes toward a subject, a character, or the audience.
The tone of this book is dark and vengeful. Throughout the book Carrie feels very irritable and helpless and at the end she is filled with anger and vengeance towards everyone.
Mood
Mood is the story's atmosphere or feelings evoked.
I'd say the mood of this book would be ominous and eerie. It real gloomy and dark. The mood goes from anger and bullying from the girls at school. Then sadness from Carrie to anger and vengeance from Carrie. Remorse from the teacher and the one girl from school Sue and her boyfriend Tommy Ross.
Point of View
The point of view is the vantage point from which a writer tells a story.
This book is written in the third person. Mainly the author or speaker tells the story through narration.
