The Curriculum Corner: Text-Dependent Questions, Pt.4
Throughout the past few weeks our focus has been to support within/beyond the text thinking through text-dependent questions that reflect the text. Today, we shift our focus to support beyond/about the text thinking through questioning that transcends the text (remember that this type of questioning ensures that texts become a tool to support learning and not the object).
Amy Boele also groups these questions into 4 main categories: situating concepts within other texts/learning, evaluating, questioning the author & acting. Much like the previous question examples, this set starts out broad and can be scaffolded as necessary. Also take note that, while these questions require deeper inferential thinking, they still support a focus on text evidence. As we work with students to support this type of purposeful talk (and writing), text selection and our essential questions must be at the forefront of planning. In other words, the content that is presented to students must support explicit text-text and text-world discourse.
Thank you for a fantastic week & don’t forget to share some ways you have promoted this type of thinking in your classroom via email or social media!
Celebration!
Words to Inspire
Congratulations!
