Week 7 Summer Term Monday 16th May- Friday 20th May 2016

IPC - Chocolate

The Grade 2J Students continued to look at sustainability this week and will begin to identify a need in the global community and choose a way in which we can help the community with this need.

Students have also begun to design their own chocolate bars using a design, make and appraise methodology. This chocolate bar design will become a reality when it is made on the upcoming field trip. Please look out for the small zip-lock bags that will come home next week. Any extra ingredients will need to be placed in this bag for the field trip.

We begin the 'hands on' learning phase of the chocolate unit next week (week 8) when we begin making chocolates and investigating the science of chocolate through experimentation. Thank you to all the parents who answered the call for volunteers for these investigations. We will be calling out for more volunteers in Week 9, so keep an eye out for this fun opportunity.

Thank you to all who have brought in their permission note and payment for the chocolate field trip. If you are not attending please advise the front office.

Language Arts

This week students have continued the topic on ‘Information Texts’ or ‘All About’ books. During DEAR and Guided Reading times students have continued to immerse themselves in non-fiction texts. When reading these texts they have been instructed to focus In particular on how authors have organised their information. When reading with your child, please pay close attention to contents pages and how information is grouped.

During their immersion into reading ‘All About’ books students have noticed all the different features that these types of books contain such as: contents page, glossary, index, headings, photographs, diagrams, captions, labels etc. This is part of the current reading CAFÉ strategy from the comprehension element of CAFE ‘Using Text Features. Identify some organisational features and explain how they help readers understand text. Students also noticed some language features of this type of writing; that these texts are all written in the present tense and third person.

This week students have researched, planned and then written a double page from an information book about an animal of their choice. When all the pages are combined together this will form part of a whole class information book about animals.

The students spelling focus this week was adding –er and –est to the ends of words. Students learned the following 3 rules:

1. In most words just add –er and –est. (long – longer – longest)

2. Words ending in –e, take off the final e and add –er and –est (nice – nicer – nicest)

3. After a short vowel sound, double the consonant and add –er and –est. (wet – wetter – wettest).

Maths - Multiplication tables of 2, 5 and 10

In Maths this week, we continued our unit on "Multiplication tables of 2, 5 and 10."

We practised counting in 2s, 5s and 10s (forwards and backwards!) and sung along to Percy Parker to help us remember the number facts. All children have been given a laminated card, showing the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and have been using this to test each other and to learn the tables.

Over the next few weeks, the children will continue to learn their tables and will focus on the 3 and 4 times tables next. We will continue to sing songs, learn rhymes and play games to learn them and will give each child a copy of the tables that they will be working on. We will continue "Times Tables Tests" to test the children on their knowledge of these tables.

The next times table test will be on Friday 27th May. This test will consist of 20 questions, all about the 3 and 4 times table.

Handwriting: Please see your child's Home Learning Notebook for the joined up letters practice page using pencil.

Spelling: Please complete the spelling sheet and remember to complete one spelling activity on Thursday. Please do this in your Home Learning book and remember to write

and underline the title.

Reading: Remember to read with an adult for 10-20 minutes each night. Practise re-telling the main points in the text.

Remember to record all reading books in the reading log found in the back of your organiser.

Grade 2 J will be sending workbooks home for the weekend on Friday 27th. Please make sure that you have set time aside over this weekend for this so that the experience is meaningful and positive. Children will come home with a package and a covering letter with guidance for parents.
