Volume 2, Issue 23 - January 25, 2019
Every week we focus on different aspect of being Respectful, Responsible, Kind, Safe or "RRKS." Staff passes RRKS ribbons to students who are caught in the act of outstanding behavior. These ribbons can then be used by students for a weekly prize raffle in the cafeteria, or used in class, team, or school wide competitions.
This week we will be looking for students who are able to:
- Include others in activities and conversations
- Use polite words and language
- Be a team player
We invite you to have conversations at home about how this behaviors look like in different environments, and encourage your students to display them at all times!

If your 8th grade student is interested in building and programming robots, then the Robotics Club may be a great after school club for them! In this club, Lego NXT robotics kits will be used to assemble and program robots to do different tasks. To sign up for this club and receive additional information, please have your student stop by Mr. Helmick's classroom (rm. 152) or email Mr. Helmick @ jhelmick@cpsk12.org. The first club date will be Tuesday, January 29th.
Congratulations!
An additional shout out goes out to Philip Nelson who was the winner of the GMS Geography Bee. Robell and Yoell Tewolde placed 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Philip will now progress to the written test to try and qualify for the state Geography Bee. Congratulations to all!
Winter Athletic Recognition Night
We will be hosting our Winter Athletic Recognition Night on Tuesday, January 29th at 6:30 pm in the cafetorium. This is a time for the coaches of our Winter sports teams to recognize both the accomplishments of their team as a whole and of individual athletes on the team. Parents of athletes are welcome to attend and enjoy this nice wrap-up and conclusion to our Winter athletic season. Hope to see you there!
Valentine's Day Gifts
We want to remind everyone that we are not able to accept Valentine's Day gifts/deliveries from parents or couriers during the school day for students. As always, we ask that families save these special Valentine's Day gifts for home and refrain from sending them to school. Thank you for understanding and helping us with this.
Spinal Screenings
Gentry Middle School Health Services will be conducting Spinal Screenings on February 8th, 11th and 12th during PE and Health classes. These screenings, which are a quick and simple examination of the back to detect abnormalities of the spine, will be offered to 6th grade girls, 7th and 8th grade boys and 7th grade girls who are new to Columbia Public Schools or who previously had an abnormal spinal screening.
Although this screening is not mandatory, it is an important part of our health program and we strongly urge l00% participation. If you not to wish for your student to be screened, advance written notification by a parent/guardian must be provided to the school nurse.
8th Grade Basketball Team Uniform Return
If your son or daughter competed on one of our 8th grade basketball teams, now is the time to have them return their uniforms. We are asking that the entire uniform (jersey top, shorts, warm-up jersey and pants) be washed and placed in a plastic bag with your student's name on the bag. Uniforms may either be turned into the main office or to your child's coach. Thanks for your help with this!
