Letter from Principal Nelson
Cougar Nation-
Welcome to 2022!
While this year may not be starting as strongly as we want it to, we are nonetheless stoked for the journey ahead with your student. We always love greeting our students after the Winter Break, but this year was a tad more special as we also got to meet and greet our twenty-five virtual students who graced us with their presence.
These students have been learning remotely the first semester and for a number of them, this was their first time on campus since their 4th-grade year. So much has changed since then, but I am happy to report that this new group of 6th graders has acclimated accordingly and are almost as excited to be on campus as we are to have them here. Not only are our teachers and staff providing warm, welcome faces and assistance, but so are our students who are letting them know that kindness and consideration are two major traits that drive our campus.
Kindness is contagious:
From the mouth of a guest teacher who had her first assignment with us on this blustery cold day: “This is the nicest campus, I have ever been on. Every adult I have come across has been helpful and the students are the kindest I have ever seen. “
These words come from a 20-year education vet who has left retirement to help out at campuses during this time of need. To note, we are the 7th AISD Middle School she has subbed at. We’re hoping we’re the last one and she comes back next week. I’m thinking she will; our kids are too kind and considerate to pass on.
COVID Updates: Please continue to monitor the AISD website and your local news affiliate of choice in regards to updates on this latest variant. We are now firmly ensconced in Stage 5 and are recommending all students and staff on campus double mask if able. If not 2 masks, then a K95 if available. If we receive a shipment of these much sought-after masks, we will certainly let our students and families know. As we told our students this morning, wearing the 2 masks not only decreases the risk of spread, it also keeps your lips and nose warm during this latest cold spell.
General Quarantine Procedures:
It’s been said that with Omnicron, it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” a person contacts the disease. While we hope you and yours never contact it, we are prepared and ready if your student does or if h/she needs to quarantine due to close contact. Please click on the link below for more information about quarantine procedures:
Thank you for your time and for your continued support. We know that our community will persevere and make it through Omnicron because we are not only battle-tested, we are also compassionate, kind, and considerate of others.

New Attendance Clerk and Procedures
Hi everyone, I am Amanda Elliott the new attendance specialist at Small. I am excited to be working with everyone and look forward to getting to know you. We have updated the Small Website Attendance page and can submit notes online. This will allow for less paper and will help make Small a Greener Campus. On the Attendance Page you can now enter an absence and request an early pickup. Remember when picking up students early to give us at least an hour notice. This will ensure you are not waiting for your student for up to 15 minutes to arrive when you get here. It helps saves you time as well and will make sure you get to where you need to go as well. You can still handwrite an excuse note as well if needed. Don't forget that school starts right at 8:20. If you arrive after that your student will be marked Tardy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions by email at amanda.elliott@austinisd.org or directly at 512-841-6702. Have a wonderful Holiday Season.
