Greenwich Schools Celebrate "World Read Aloud Day"

On February 5, 2020, students and staff across Greenwich Public Schools participated in “World Read Aloud Day,” to celebrate the importance of sharing stories. Families and community members volunteered to read aloud to students across all grade levels. Special guest readers across the District included: First Selectman Fred Camillo, Selectman Lauren Rabin, Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones, Chair of the Board of Education Peter Bernstein, Board Member Christina Downey, and many more!

LitWorld founded World Read Aloud Day in 2010 as an opportunity for people all around the globe to celebrate the joy of reading aloud, and advocate for literacy as a fundamental human right that belongs to everyone. Over the last ten years, World Read Aloud Day has evolved into a global movement of millions of readers, writers, and listeners from communities all across the world coming together to honor the joy and power of reading and sharing stories, and continue expanding the definition and scope of global literacy.

Old Greenwich School Principal, Ms. Jennifer Bencivengo, said, “This day is always so special for our school community. We have family members, members of our local government and more visiting our building, bringing with them an energy for learning and love of reading.”

Spotlight on Strong Performance for Greenwich Public School Students

Key highlights from recent performances by our students include:

  • NAGI Results: The State of Connecticut's Department of Education recently released the results from the latest Next Generation Accountability Index (NGAI) for the 2018-2019 school year. Greenwich Public Schools had six Schools of Distinction identified from 162 total Schools of Distinction across Connecticut and had the third highest K-12 district performance index in the State. Congratulations to our "Schools of Distinction" Julian Curtiss School, Glenville School, North Mianus School, North Street School, Riverside School and Parkway School!
  • U.S. Presidential Scholar Candidates: Eight Greenwich High School seniors have been identified as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program and are eligible to apply to become semifinalists.Each year over 4,500 candidates are identified for the component of the program that focuses on academic achievement, based on having scored exceptionally well on the SAT or the ACT exams. Congratulations to Cynthia Chen, Phoebe Hartch, Tobin Hirsch, Raina Jain, Kira Wang, Zachary Wang, Melissa Woo, and Kyle Xiong!
  • GHS Model UN Students Recognized at Harvard Model UN Competition: Last weekend, Greenwich High School’s Model United Nations Club participated in the Sixty-Seventh Session of Harvard Model United Nations Conference, a prestigious program that gathers high school delegates and their faculty advisors to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Seventeen Greenwich High School students were recognized for their performance, representing the most successful showing the school’s club has had at this event. Congratulations to our recognized students: Akshay Joglekar, Archer Manning, Nikhil Khanna, David Katz, Emilia Thornton, Tim Kim, Emma Burstiner, Julia Blank, Veda Swaminathan, Aarya Dhru, Ambika Grover, Kwame Boateng, Ben Shi, Matthew Meyers, Zane Khader, Melissa Woo and Luis Quisumbing.

GHS InLab Exhibition at Bruce Museum

Last night, Greenwich High School’s Innovation Lab hosted their InLab Exhibit at Bruce Museum. This event showcased projects from our 10th and 11th Grade Humanities and STEM Project-Based Learning (PBL) programs.

GHS InLab Teacher, Ms. Courtney Hawes shared, “The exhibition of student learning is one of the hallmarks of the Innovation Lab experience. It’s an inspiring opportunity for students to showcase their work in a real and meaningful way, made possible by our partnership with the Bruce Museum and Corrine Flax; it truly enriches the InLab experience and our curriculum.”

Innovation Lab is a rigorous, interdisciplinary, school-within-a-school model at Greenwich High School. This progressive and personalized model is designed and implemented by a dedicated team of GHS educators who are leveraging innovative teaching methods, project-based and blended learning strategies, and leading-edge technology applications, all within the larger infrastructure of GHS.

GPS Honor Band Performance

Last night, Greenwich Public School’s Third Annual Honor Band Performance, with guest conductor Sal LaRusso, took place at the GHS Performing Arts Center for an audience of parents and community members. Honor Band is comprised of over 100 fifth and sixth grade band students representing every elementary and middle school. These students were nominated to join this group by their respective band teachers; selections were based on their musical aptitude, hard work and dedication to their instrument.

Band Teacher and Honor Band Co-Chair Ms. Holly Brown shared, “The Honor Band Festival has quickly become a staple of the band program in the Greenwich Public Schools. This is our third year and I believe it is something all of the teachers and students look forward to each year. It is exciting to have this high level of collaboration happening on a District-wide level.”

Students in the Honor Band rehearsed three times as a group ahead of their performance, and also diligently prepared at home and at their schools. A great feature of the program is the relationship building between Honor Band members. Often times, the sixth graders serve as role models for their fifth-grade band partners.

Science Night at ISD

At the International School at Dundee, January was Science Month! Every year, the school and PTA partner to hold two Science Nights where students and their parents have a blast with science exploration. This year, ISD had Mad Science present a program they call "Up, Up and Away," which ties into classroom instructional units. The program is an engaging and visually exciting presentation with demonstrations about air, included a hands-on expo with four zones of experimentation and make-and-take projects!

GPS Instructional Coach to Publish Children's Book

Valerie Bolling has been in the District for 27 years: twelve at Hamilton Avenue, five at Western, and ten in her current position as instructional coach.

On March 7, Ms. Bolling's children's book, Let's Dance! will officially launch with a Book Launch Event at the Harry Bennett Library in Stamford at 11:00am. The event is free and open to the public. The event will include: a question and answer session, dance activity for children and book signing.

Let’s Dance! is a rhythmic showcase of dances from all over the world that features children of diverse backgrounds and abilities tapping, spinning, and boogying away. With musical, rhyming text, Ms. Bolling shines a spotlight on dances from across the globe, while energetic art from Maine Diaz shows off all the moves and the diverse people who do them. From the cha-cha of Cuba to the stepping of Ireland, kids will want to leap, dip, and zip along with the dances on the page.

Projects Update

Julian Curtiss Feasibility Committee

Yesterday, the Julian Curtiss Feasibility Committee held a meeting at the school and started the process with their architecture team from Perkins and Eastman, as they begin the work of creating the educational specification. Meeting minutes will be posted shortly.
