Fork Shoals Library Ledger

News for the week of November 11th

Honor our Veterans @ your Library!

Happy Veterans' Day to all those brave men and women who have served and continue to serve in our nation's military.

Consider honoring our veterans by reading a book in their honor! Here are a few you may enjoy!

  • Always to Remember by Brent K. Ashabranner
  • The Vietnam Veterans Memorial by Muriel L. Dubois
  • South Carolina Remembers World War II by 8th grade students of Northwest Middle School
  • The Wall by Eve Bunting
  • Veterans Day by Mari C. Schuh
  • Stick and Whittle by Sid Hite
  • America's White Table by Margot Theis Raven

Be sure to take a look at the very special America's White Table display on the stage in the cafeteria. Fork Shoals students will be watching a very special reading of this moving book in honor of Veterans Day.

2nd Quarter Reading Challenge has begun!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 1st Quarter 30-Book Reading Challenge! Ms. Knight will be drawing names/classes for fabulous prizes this week!

The 2nd Quarter Reading Challenge began on Monday, October 28th. Once again, K5-2nd grade students are challenged to read 30 books (or more) this quarter. 3rd-5th grade students are challenged to read at least 500 pages!

Reading logs were placed in teachers' boxes and handed out to students. The Reading Challenge logs for the 2nd quarter will be due to Ms. Knight on Tuesday, January 21st.

Attention 4th and 5th graders! Battle of the Books is about to begin!

How to participate in Battle of the Books (BoB) at Fork Shoals:
  • Read a minimum of 3 (preferably 5) of the 10 books listed below by the beginning of December.
  • Attend practice sessions on Tuesday afternoons (2:30-3:00) in the library starting in December continuing through April.
  • Read at least 6 of the 10 books by the beginning of January.
  • Read all 10 books by the beginning of February.

*If the number of students participating exceeds the required number for a school team, it may be necessary to assess which students are most knowledgeable about the books through a written evaluation or a school competition round to be determined by the librarian.*

District competition is typically mid-April at Mauldin High School in the early evening. Students must have their own transportation to this event.

This year's Battle of the Books titles are:

  • Double Dog Dare by Lisa Graff
  • Freaky Fast Frankie Joe by Lutricia Clifton
  • Leepike Ridge by N.D. Wilson
  • Pie by Sarah Weeks
  • Plunked by Michael Northrop
  • The Adventures of Beanboy by Lisa Harkrader
  • The Humming Room by Ellen Potter
  • The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis
  • Waiting for the Magic by Patricia MacLachlan
  • Wonder by R.J. Palacio

See Ms. Knight if you'd like more information on Battle of the Books.

Book of the Week: Sarah Emma Edmonds Was a Great Pretender

Sarah Emma Edmonds Was a Great Pretender, written by Carrie Jones and illustrated by Mark Oldroyd, is a nominee for the 2013-14 South Carolina Picture Book Award.

Until I read this book, the story Sarah Emma Edmonds was unknown to me. I find it fascinating that a woman could go virtually her entire life pretending to be someone else and have no one be the wiser. I appreciate that this book gives young girls yet another heroine to read about. When learning about the Civil War, female heroes are few and far between, so it's nice to add one more to the lineup!
