Welcome to FIRST GRADE
We are so excited about this year. We have a lot of new things in our curriculum that we are going to be doing. First Grade is building the foundation for the rest of your child's educational career. We want to be PARTNERS with you to help your child succeed.
Please email your child's teacher and let her know if you would be willing to volunteer to cut things out either at home or in the office workroom.
HOMEWORK!!!!!
Your child will have HOMEWORK every night M-Th. Please remind them to put it back in their green folder when they are done so that it can come to school the very next day. It is very important that your child brings their homework back, the red reader, or the book in a bag (that will start soon). It starts their day off so much better when they get rewarded for bringing these things. We love to EMPHASIZE the POSITIVE!
Testing
We will start reading individually with your child in the coming weeks. It is really important that he/she gets a good night's sleep every night. First grade is a lot of work and they will be tired at the end of the day.
READ! READ! READ!
Reading should be a part of your child's daily routine. Even if it isn't part of a homework assignment it is very helpful for them to be reading to you or for you to read to them. Besides, it creates great memories for them as a time of bonding.
Learning to Tie!
A great way for your child to feel success is being able to tie their own shoes. Please help them learn to tie their laces. Many of them are doing an EXCELLENT job! We give out BRAG TAGS for those that help others tie shoes.
VOLUNTEERS
We would love for a few parents to put together our new math program folders for us. If you are interested and you have the time please email your child's teacher. If you are wanting to go on field trips you must fill out a PISD VOLUNTEER APPLICATION online. You ROCK!
Healthy Snacks
Since your child will be eating lunch at 12:00 pm, they might be hungry midmorning. We will be having a snack around 9 am each morning. Please send a healthy snack with your child. A good snack might be small carrots, grapes, raisins, crackers, a granola bar, a banana, goldfish crackers, or pretzels. It must be something that he/she will be able to eat with their fingers.
UNHEALTHY
No chips, candy, poptarts, fruit snacks please. These will be put back into their backpacks and sent back home. Your child will be very sad that they can not eat their snack for the day. We need them to be energized since our curriculum is very demanding. Thank you for helping us.
TOO MESSY
Even though kids love yogurt it is too messy to eat in the classroom. Please do not send anything that requires a spoon or fork. The children will be working while they are eating. Believe it or not, the children get very upset when their papers get dirty or wet.
NOT GETTING OUR NEWSLETTER??????
We use the Pink forms that you fill out and the emails that you have on file with the district for our distribution list. If you know of someone that isn't getting our S'MORE Newsletter please have them send a note to their child's teacher with an email that they are wanting to use.
Science Unit
In Science we have been studying about ways to make and keep ourselves HEALTHY. Students are learning about good foods, exercise, and healthy habits. Please talk with your child about what they have learned. They are very excited about making a HEALTHY ME DOLL.
