Classical Chats
"Students must work hard in the grammar and dialectic stages of learning an instrument: they must learn the names of the notes and the sounds they make, the proper handling of instruments, time signatures, and techniques. But the joy of music can be experiences as soon as a simple tune is played on a tin whistle. That joy will motivate the hard work required. That joy is the language and rhetoric of music." Leigh Bortins, The Conversation.
This week at home for Foundations you should be reviewing week 3-9 New Grammar with your children. (If your child is sitting for memory master I encourage you to review all the way back to week one. Week 9 and Beyond
Foundations to Challenge
What fun we had today learn about our constellations!! When I study astronomy I am amazed even more about the greatness of our Father. It boggles my mind to think that he has named each star and yet he is just as personal with me. There are lots of activities and crafts you can do if your children enjoyed the science project this week.
Take time to watch the video below that talks about how the zodiac tells the gospel message.
In Foundations we study the tin whistle for six weeks each year. Students learn the basics of music theory by learning the names of notes, how to count rhythms, how to play loud and soft (dynamics), how to draw notes on the staff, how to play the D major scale (the key in which the tin whistle plays), and how to put all these skills together to play simple tunes. In Challenge, students will further this study by spending 15 weeks on music theory, learning the skills necessary to interpret pieces of music and compose their own. The title of their text is "Math in Motion." this title reveals an older understanding of music as one of the four arts of number from the Quadrivium (along with math, geometry, and astronomy). Music is pleasing to us because of harmony, which is achieved by the mathematical proportions between the notes and because of rhythm, which is achieved by mathematically spacing the notes. Celebrate these connections between math and music!
