Community Service Project (CSP)
We have two February CSPs...
The first is Jump Rope for Heart, sponsored by our 2nd and 3rd graders. Yesterday was the "jumping" event! Students raised over $1900.00.
Also, our Kindergarten students are sponsoring Birthday Bags for the Hungry. They are collecting boxed cake mixes and canned frosting. Their goal is to collect 70 of each item. Collection boxes will be located in each wing.
Our January CSP, Adopt-A-Pet, sponsored by our 5th grade is complete. Thanks to the generosity of students, parent, and staff, they exceeded their goal! They collected 154 items (goal 150) and $120.78 (goal $100.00). Way to go!!
Student Lighthouse Team Update (SLT)
The SLT stands for the Student Lighthouse Team. One of our jobs is to help organize the Community Service Projects. Here are our Community Service Projects:
November - Canned Food Drive / Winter Clothing Drive
December - Placemats for Seniors
January - Adopt-A-Pet
February - Birthday Bags for the Hungry / Jump Rope for Heart
March - Special Olympics
April - Autism Awareness / Bowls for Hunger
May - Community Beautification Rock Painting
We do Community Service Projects to help people in our community. Each grade level brainstormed ideas and then voted on a project to sponsor. After our project was set, we set a goal for what we could accomplish. Community Service Projects help us use all of the Habits. Every month you can check our goals in our front showcase.
Co-Curricular Corner - Mrs. Marchbanks/Art
Recently, 5th graders conducted a science experiment in art class; they started with only cups of water dyed red, yellow and blue. Their challenge was to recreate the entire color wheel, using only those three primary colors. They took notes on their discoveries and these notes will help with to complete an upcoming project. Third graders and kindergarteners will soon be engaging in some other color experiments in art class!
Sharpen the saw with your family at home by trying an art/science experiment at home!
You will need at least 3 empty cups, water, food coloring and paper towel. Set your 3 empty cups in a row. Fill the cups on the ends with water and drop food coloring into those two cups. Cut a paper towel in half and then fold it into quarters lengthwise. Stick one end of the paper towel into the colored water and one into the empty cup. Repeat with the other cup filled with water.
You will have to be patient to see what will happen next, but it is well worth the wait!
If you try this experiment at home email your results to Mrs. Marchbanks at alison.marchbanks@has-k12.org and your discovery could be published for all to see in next week's newsletter!
